m motor mount bolts
Just below, I have a post looking for shocks... the more I think about it,
I am convinced that it is in fact motor mount bolt being backed out or possibly broken. As all the symptoms i am having are directing towards to bolts. Here are my symptoms, when I start the car, I feel the vibration that were not there before. Under load(1 or 2 gear), going slow around 1~2k I hear something rattling but very faint. Going over bumps, I hear clunks that werent there before(why I thought it was shocks but shocks are very firm, swaybars are intact). I tried to look under the hood but bolts seems to be there not missing. is there any m owner who can tell me this is infact mount bolts related? I've took it to the shop and told them to check the motor mount while changing oil and they say everything is fine. but they never took out the undertray to take a loook. They just visually looked at the mount and told me mount is fine. I dont think they checked for the bracket bolts. so please help if you are a m owner! |

It's pretty tough to comment, based on your info.
On the right side you can get to some of them through the wheel well. You will need to get a socket on them to tell if they are loose. Visual alone will not do it.

motor mounts
The motor mounts are studs with M12 flange nuts on them - you can look down on the left side of the car and see them just about level with the middle of the wheel well.
I would be very surprised if the noise were these nuts cause they are rubber mounted. I would expect maybe a bushing in the front suspension - kind of a clunk clunk / |

I think the OP is talking about these Bolts backing out, which is a common issue.

I had the dealer check mine when it was under warranty and they replaced them.
Before replacement any bump would cause an awful clunk that would make you hold your breath and cringe when going over it. I don't recall any noise or excessive vibration...mostly just a big clunk when going over a bump. |

After taking my car to the so-called bimmer specialist, they failed to spot problem which resulted in engine mount snapping in half. Half of the bolt disappeared and other half in the block.
I took the car to another shop, who was able to spot and did manage to safely remove the remains of the bolt from the block without tapping it. Changed all 4 and hit them with locktite, checked driverside. thank god finally fixed everything. Car back into storage now. phew.. Toronto locals, Alphawerks is the place that I took my car to. Very skilled and honest and hungry to make into bmw scene(he is factory bmw trained and worked at maranello). I will post some pictures when I get home |

If you are going to use locktite make sure it's the hi-temp.
Normal locktite melts with heat & becomes a lubricant. IMO you are better with them dry & just properly torque. Or use nordlocks.

I don't see a high temp loctite available. There's a blue (removable - 242) and a red (high strength - 271). Both are advertized for automotive use with a service temperature up to 300F.
I used the 242 when I had my bolts replaced...so we'll see if there will be any trouble with them loosening in the future. Didn't want to go with nordlocks because it was smaller (in diameter) than the OE washer - I wanted more "clamping" surfaces on these bolts. |
