F10 M5 shifter on a Z4?

Had anyone tried out the new F10 M5 Illuminated Shift Knob on the Z4 yet? => http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...catalogid=4462

I'm wondering if you can separate the boot to make it fit onto the Z4. If so, it's definitely a great and cheaper alternative to the lighted ZHP knob from leatherZ.

Do you not have the stock shift knob on your Z4MC? The M Roadsters and Coupes came with an illuminated shift knob as standard equipment. Many people replace them with the ZHP shift knob which is shorter. If you're not the original owner, maybe the previous owner replaced the shift knob. When I bought my car it had the ZHP shift knob.

The good news is that if you don't have the stock shift knob but want to have an illuminated shift knob, all you have to do is order the OEM illuminated shift knob. The plastic electrical connector on the shift knob will connect to the stock electrical connector with no splicing. The part number you want is 25117836906 at getbmwparts.com. Since I ordered one they've reduced the price from $113.58 to $70.75.

The F10 M5 is essentially an illuminated ZHP knob. That's the purpose of that thread I believe.

....if it fits then we must acquit.

I would really like to know if it fits as it would be nice to have a lit ZCP knob.

I have the OE illuminated knob and have already swapped it out with an illuminated ZHP. I only brought it up for those looking for a cheaper alternative to the modified lighted ZHP knob offered by LeatherZ. I also already know a stock ZHP knob can be had for about $60, but a lighted 6-speed ZHP knob from LeatherZ is just a shade under $300.

there's a guy in Germany on ebay who modifies ZHP knobs with the color LED of your choice for about $100....I chose white to match the gauge cluster...but be warned, his wires are thin and will rip out if you remove your knob (ask me how I know).

The M5 knob is heavier and taller by a hair. Something like 1/16" taller and 18 grams heavier from memory. I prefer the M5 knob (the leather is nicer as well) over the ZHP since I also have the SSK.

Pungo, Nice! Did you take the F10 ring off and just attach the Z4 base ring to it or did you just cut the boot off and attach it to the Z4 boot?

I installed one earlier this summer. Cut the M5 boot off and only installed the knob.

Me too, but I kept the M5 boot and just attached the Z4 base ring.
The M5 boot has much nicer leather.

I swapped the ring from the Z4 over to the F10 leather boot. The F10 leather is just nicer, so I figured why not use it. Here are some pictures of the results.

Thanks so much. Excited to get this thing in the mail. But I'm kinda nervous about DIY'ing the boot ring swap.

I'm lousy with fabric and glue. I usually end up glued to the project, which ends up 1/4" short.
I had no problem doing it and it looks gorgeous.
I would consider it an "entry level" DIY.

So I got the shifter in yesterday, detached the boot rings from both today and I have to say. The boot on the Z4's ring is hard as Fuuuhk to remove. The glue is insane. Took a while to separate the leather boot from the ring and managed to cut a decent bit from too. But it came off.

The F10's leather boot is much, much easier to remove. There's still a little bit of glue towards the edges but it's a lot easier to remove than the Z4's

Now I have the issue of getting the F10 boot on the Z4's ring.

Can someone guide me on the easiest way to do it? Should I just cut the holes to fit around the clips and just fit it in the car or should I start to glue it in?
