VANOS nightmare before trackday

A bit more than a week before my 3/3 trackday with NCRC, I found out I have broken hub tab in my VANOS when I was adjusting my valve clearance. Quickly ordered parts, and cryogenically treated hub; VANOS was done in the same day I received the tools and hub. But that wasn't the worst nightmare, the broken tab fell into the timing chain area when I popped the VANOS apart. Fun started with harbor tools engine support bar ($69), a big surgery was carried out involving removing/disconnecting of steering column, steering rack, sway bar, reinforcement plate, subframe, engine mounts, FCABs, and headlight auto leveler. Luckily I was able to put my car back into one piece @ 1am before the event. Slept <5 hours and drove all the way up to Thunderhill

only a few photos (hands were always dirty and didn't have any helper).

Finally, I was chasing Porsches at the track again but with soft brakes (didn't flush it because of VANOS issue)

Thanks Trev...

I never came across that thread somehow.. my z4m is more of a dedicated track car with almost 30k on the odo. It has done 3 years of avid autox and about 11 trackdays (never really counted)...

Here is one of my cam bolts... looks like Z4M has inherited the same hub and bolt issue from E46 M3.

I am in awe you took that project on by yourself. Great job getting it together before the track day. It certainly seems you did the job correctly based on the video!

chickdr - yeah I was glad I got all done before the trackday.

bignosejim - My car came with the old bolts. I took the shot after I replaced 3 old ones.

Best thing is that even with all that in the week before the trackday, and up till all hours, he was still there bright and early Saturday morning! Looked pretty good from what I could see (in person, haven't seen the video yet, need to be home to do that).

How could you tell that you had the broken tab? Were there any noises or driveability issues? Also, what is your build date?

From what I've heard, one broken tab doesn't give any symptoms.

Cliffhopper is right.. no symptoms until both tabs are broken, but usually that is when your timing chain breaks and eats into other parts of your engine. You can see the exhaust hub when you do valve adjustment (second photo), and you can rotate the engine to check on the tabs.

How can I skip trackdays... I am registered for 4/7 already will be running in the Open group with my near stock Z4M on street rubbers. The only mods I have are GC coilovers + cryogenically treated exhaust hub + newer cam bolts (if they count) certain that I will fly by those E46 M3s with broken tabs or loose bolts.

that is why i bought the special tools from Tischer. I track this car hard and I am planning to check cam bolts and exhaust hub every other year since I do my own valve adjustment.

Props to you, bro. Definitely outside the realms of a simple oil change. And some serious dedication too.

Saw in your video what looks like a cell phone mounted on the monitor. If you're interested in a really great mount, check out the Bracketron Universal Hold It mini. I've been using it to hold mine for track data and it's fantastic. It's a male and female tapered dovetail pieces that fit together super nicely. It's hold is fantastic, and removal is really easy, plus they are super cheap!
