Ive been talking with some people over at ACPT (Advanced Composite Products and technology) and Im trying to get something going with these guys to try and pump out a few Carbon Fiber Driveshafts.

The gains would be pretty decent in terms of how much more usable power you will have to the wheels, especially for all you SC'd Z4M's out there (fr8tdog,Beedub,etc)

I think this is just another edge that hasnt been explored yet and I am wondering how many of you are down for this.

And second, who has a complete Z4 M driveshaft assembly for ACPT to use as a model since this concept for the Z4 M is rather new.

the link to their website :http://www.acpt.com/driveshaft/driveshafts.html

I think everyone here understands basic physics and laws of rotational mass.

Im not saying this will get you into the 10's but its a pretty neat MOD that will yield and yield plenty of benefit in the long run. The carbon driveshafts these guys produce are rated up to 1000 horses or some crazy number like that.

A lot vettes use em and Semi's and such.

Just wanted to see if anyones interested in jumping in on this and maybe....maybe a group buy. i think 7 to 900 dollars might be forseeable as far as a price is concerned ( my best guess)

photo attached is just an idea of what it could look like. disregard the brand on the bottom ACPT says they can do it

Interesting..........
I know of the pros, but am wondering if there are any long-term cons?

You realize this driveshaft in "official" production for a relatively "high" volume C5 retails for 2k...?

Right, but you don't post any info regarding how many they would need to sell to support your price, which you also mention is just "your best guess"...if we're talking about comparable products and prices, the one in the pic you posted is the best to go off of. Do the "vette guys" have experience with ACPT or PFADT? The ACPT website does not offer much insight in this case...

Semantics aside, i think that we can all agree that the idea of having a CF/DS is sick in terms of geometry, safety, torque, and weight savings.

I understand that, but given that was the only item in your post I could find a history of existing, other than the fact that there is a website for a company called ACPT, I would seriously think that providing answers to the other unknowns I mentioned in the post of mine you've quoted will get you further along with this project than telling me to chill will.

It's like saying, here's a picture of what this will be like, but made by someone else, and for considerably less. In the back of every critical thinker's mind, they are asking the same question - "what's the catch?" Providing some more information is in your best interest.

Understandable, now getting back to the original thread with out you dumping all over it, more data will be presented, i think the first hurdle would be to send them a drive shaft so they can spit out a prototype.

I doubt we can find one for free, but this guy may still have one that could be used...

Cons = not necessarily stronger than steal.

These don't like wheel hop or diverse loads very well (something quite common when launching / doing slides / etch on a radial tire with stiff side walls). When they break, they break violently, not necessarily that they do damage to anything else, but rather that they literally will shatter upon failure.

Second thing to realize is that while Carbon fiber is a strong material often compared to steel at a significant weight savings, you're putting your driveline in the hands of a glue/epoxy. Carbon doesn't bolt to aluminum so an epoxy is used to affix the mounting surface to the carbon shaft. I've seen many cases where the joint itself begins spinning inside of the carbon fiber shaft, sometimes after only a few miles. This varies from brand to brand and application to application.

If you're really looking to drop weight, this should be last on your list. Lightweight wheels, tires, brake components, flywheel, clutch, etc all should be on your wish list well before a carbon shaft.

I'm in agreement/compliance with the above

But a CF DS would be amazingly cool...much like anything else made from CF

Coming from someone whose used them, it's real cool until it breaks unexpectedly.... race parts / carbon driveshafts are normally not a warrantied item, and being out a grand = not much fun for limited gains.

This is for the negative nancy who was saying I didnt know what I was talking about.....I just got an email back from MARK at ACPT and it says:

This looks like a shaft we could easily build, we would need some time on it though. I already have a similar shaft in line to be built. If you would like to send a shaft to use as a sample I think we could have a shaft done during August. We would need time to machine the splined part that fits the inner race of the CV joint and the 3 finger flex disc yoke.

We build the Corvette shafts now with great results, that shaft runs $799.00. I think your shaft would run in the $1200.00 range if we can get about 10 guys interested.
