New owner thinking about exhaust mods

Just wanted to say hi to everyone on the forum, I've been lurking on here for a long while then finally took the plunge and traded my 335i for a M coupe.

After a couple of weeks I've already decided the stock exhaust is just way too quiet. It's the dead of winter up here in the great white north so I do have some time to consider my options. So far the two front runners seem to be the RPi and the Arqray cans. However I'm also considering replacing both section 1 and section 2 with the supersprint versions and leaving the stock mufflers. I haven't been able to find any videos or impressions from anyone who has tried it. Any thoughts on what it might sound like? I figured it would be a little more subtle and raspy than changing the cans, but I've always been a fan of the oem+ kind of look.

Thoughts?

the first thing you wanna replace is the stock header, supersprint makes them. biggest gain/money

+1. You just have to worry about emissions.

I don't have to worry about emissions as there's no testing of any kind here in Alberta haha. Will the header make the car noticeably louder though? I'm under no illusions about getting any noticeable performance gains without getting crazy. I'm looking mostly for more sound at this point as I haven't even touched what the car is capable of yet. And I couldn't stand to drive the car with a CEL so I would have to get a tune as well.

If I can find some time over the next week or two... I'll be mating a SS X-pipe to stock mufflers. I'll let you know how that turns out. If it's crap, then I'll just go SS all the way back.

That is, unless there's any info on progress with some other mufflers in the work for our cars (UUC, u reading me?)

Here's a pretty good thread comparing some of the usual axle-back candidates...Of course, nothing compares to hearing things in person, but it gives a good idea.

Lot's of threads on this topic as there are typically pro/con to each option. Try the board's advanced search feature on "exhaust" and limit it to the Z portion of the board--or try this.

Wife has the Eisenmann sport installed--no drone, good increase in sound (level and quality), easier to heel/toe, not so loud you can't stand it after a week (or an hour in the car) or that is attracts LEO attention, sounds fantastic outside the car too....

off topic, but it's funny how u and mfanatic25 have the same avatar picture.

anyway, i was seriously contemplating swapping the mufflers for a pair of supersprint ones, but was just not prepared to tolerate any drone at all, since most of my driving is highway-based. i was looking at a couple of variable valve type systems that cost many arms and legs (kks and kreissieg), but these two were always going to be pipe dreams to start with going by their respective prices.

sooooo, i ended up getting a gruppe m

Yeah i suppose either way if the route I take ends up being too quiet I can always just add/delete parts until I get the sound I want.

Also on a side note is there two versions of the Arqray cans? I noticed some people are saying they're crazy loud and others are saying they're quiet. Just personal preference or a difference between JASMA and USDM specs?

Now we are in other peoples hand so we need to go by their schedule, but overall we are on schedule, just no pictures to post yet, once they manufactory the pieces we will have them assy here, do a final test fit and check for any changes if needed, then send to Ceramic coating and after is back we can take some final product pictures, we are working on a website and in a partnership with some vendors to sell our system also we will offer a custom tuning done by ESS.

Here are two small vids I shot of my brothers car with my blackberry. I wasn't planning on shooting any vids that day but just could help trying to record the scream that comes out of those pipes. Sorry there is a bit of a long actionless intro in both vids.

It's not an idea. It's reality (at least that's what I'm being told by them). Supposed to be 2 months out MAX. It would be my #1 choice for exhaust IF it happens. (and not JUST for SC'd applications)

I just wonder if they are talking about my system, since I had some conversation with them about a system that I'm putting on the market and could have them sell or if they are putting a new system in the market besides maybe mine.

US Spec is slightly louder than Jasma Spec, which is geared towards the NA market.

Arqray Exhausts definitely don't have that much drone though. My M friends all love their US Spec Arqray Exhausts and were amazed by the craftsmanship.

Not to mention, EAS is having a 25% off sale!!!

JVT Headers, stock section 1, SuperSprint section 2, SuperSprint Race Cans. There is drone between 2900-3300ish.

If only EAS had discounted the MZ4 arqray stuff! Unfortunately it's only on the standard cars I think. Too bad, at 1575 it would be a no brainer
