Beedub, thanks for the idle video! I am flabbergasted at just how serene the operation of your motor is! I can only hope my kit will stabilize to that point after the new crank pulley is installed.
cliffhopper, maybe I will go out to Mfest and we can meet up there? Did you have any plans to go? Updates based on my extensive drive time with the car today (almost 500 miles): - Confirmed that oil temperatures are slightly higher than stock despite the enlarged oil cooler--even in 60-70ºF weather. Difference is probably +20ºF. It used to be quite rare to see the car hit 210º oil temp (center point on US gauge), but it now commonly likes to operate around there. Fortunately, it does not climb much higher than that even when pushed. - Pulls like hell on the highway, despite the lower boost. I may or may not have done a few pulls to 140-150... At ~70-80 in 6th, the car is extremely eager to GO with just millimeters additional throttle application. - The S/C was still rattling like a bucket of bolts halfway down, with at least ~350 miles on it. I didn't get a good listen before shutting down tonight. Hope it quiets down soon. - The tune is still struggling on part-throttle deceleration. It's starting to get frustrating and a bit disconcerting, because it's a real downer to feel one's machine jerking the drivetrain and emit pops in the exhaust during such normal and somewhat difficult-to-avoid driving situations. I've done everything I can to help the DME train, including use cruise control and setting various RPMs to give it time to watch the O2s. - The BPV still whistles very annoyingly at its tipping point. With the windows down you can tell just how loud it is; it's annoying inside the car with them up, but with them down, it's just embarrassing and makes you sorry for any bystanders...quite a terrible, ricey screech that no one would identify with performance, only a broken car. A slight throttle change will make it go away, but it's constantly getting in the way especially on surface streets. My girlfriend took a couple acceleration videos from the passenger seat, but since she stuck the camera out the window, wind noise almost immediately overwhelms the camera's microphone. Only one video is worth anything, and that's not much--just a couple seconds of glory in 1st gear. It's hardly worth posting, but I know some people are eager for more! iphone...... mmmm honestly, i can sense your "alittle" dissapointed, i too would be without the correct crank pullies and the "noisey BOV" but let me put your mind a rest, once you get this crank pulley on i promise your issues in the mid range and eratic idle will be solved, youve seem my idle clip which is as i orginally said far smoother than it ever was stock, now the BOV noise??? im not to sure?? mines doesnt make the embarresing noise you talk about and ive got a roadster?? all i hear is super cool mecanical s/c noise, maybe you should request a new BOV from ess..................
hopefully your crank pully comes in early this week and you will not believe the difference it will make, your simply driving a car tuned for a certain boost out of its comfort range, it will cause you issues........... p.s your blower WILL quieten down, but at idle the slight rattle will be always evident, but the real bad noise will die down.

Not gonna lie; after putting as many miles on the kit as I have due to the drive to SoCal, I'm downright concerned. To review:
1) Problems with the tune persist and definitely won't be going away. I'm willing to believe the crank pulley will at least mostly solve these and I can use my Direct Flash to upload a new file from ESS if necessary. I've also noticed vibration at higher RPM, probably due to the under-tensioned belt, so I can't do any more pulls above ~4k until it's fixed. This is a particular bummer because I'm in SoCal to show the car to all my friends (most of whom are down here); I don't make it down more than twice a year and don't want to put that many miles on the car even that frequently, usually flying. 2) Based your and Tom's descriptions, there's definitely something wrong with the BPV, even though all connections look good. It's extremely annoying and I hope it doesn't take too long for ESS to diagnose as well as fix. The noise is definitely not the supercharger because slight adjustment of the throttle position can make it start or stop completely, almost instantly. It's just on the balance of speed/throttle where the BPV is starting to recirculate. 3) The past two cold startups of the car--both before my long drive (when setting out) and this morning, included a horrendous screeching/almost metal scraping noise for ~5 seconds, which then goes away and doesn't come back. I can only hope this is part of the break-in process of the supercharger; perhaps the compressor wheel actually touches the housing when it's completely cold, but I never heard a description of this problem. I never expected it would happen again this morning after ~500 miles more on the kit, so tomorrow morning I'll have the camera running for the startup. None of this is against ESS, because it's pretty established knowledge that their kits define the benchmark of aftermarket quality, but it looks like I've just been pretty unlucky in attaining the typically problem-free install. arhhh shit.....
i had my problems during install trust me, unfortunatly this is a VERY complicated install and needs to be done to anal levels of perfection, one thing slightly out of line.... = problems. the metal on metal sound IS NOT something you should be experiencing, if that compressor blade touches the houseing you need a new one s/c.. simple as that, are you sure the oil hasnt drained out the unit and left it running dry??? My BOV does have a very slight whistle are certain revs but its certainly not bypassing on part throttle?? again this is why a compliment of gauges let you know exactly whats happening, i think you need to stop using the car im afraid........ Ess WILL sort you out, im confident of that, they'll be watching this thread now ;-) your experiences are SO far from what ive seen their may be a install issue here...... ive had 2 installs now at my very very good shop hre in the uk and not once have i experienced what your saying BUT,.. these things happen, hold your nerve and it'll al come good. you Need that crank pulley, after that i feel you may need a new s/c unit and BOV. Does belt alignment look good? pull the s/c intake and cool @ the compressor blade ;-) good luck brother....... p.s i did have my issues as well, you just gotta keep cool and work it out with ess!! i promise they wont let you down.

Is te screeching like a belt screeching on a pos car when the belts are getting loose? I'm thinking it's that under-tensioned belt you've got there..

iphone, can you please take a video of the cars idle from inside the car looking at the rev counter?? Did your shop reset the adaptions?? please check; BOV bolts for tightness Sensor under intake mani for tightness and proper orientation injectors are installed correctly and seated properly, one little nick in one of the orings ill cause idle issues. Belt tension, very easy to tighten. check the s/c is mounted perfectly square to all mounting surfaces. check all i/c piping for leaks, and definatly check vacuum, you should be seeing -19 to -21, great indicator things are looking good.. on a cooler morning the first start can start with a chirp but it doesnt last any longer than half a second!! like a very quick chirp!!! this is normal. iphone can i help you with this at all?? do you need pics of a specific part for example, you sound like your having install issues imo....... once you get your crank pulley this will iron out some issues and then you can properly trouble shoot. byron

It could be the belt slipping but it seems unusual to me that a fairly low-resistance thing like spinning the S/C up to high idle would cause the belt to slip, even somewhat under-tensioned as it is. The car is my only transportation and obviously I have to drive it, so when I start it up in another ~15 minutes I'll get a video in case it screeches again. Should be able to post it an hour after that.
My shop also took almost a full week to do the install--5 days, because he worked the weekend due to delays associated with shipping the backordered oil cooler. |

Yeah we took about a week with my install too. I'm on a hunt for a longer 45 degree intake coupler, since mine is a bit short

So if I decide to get this install done @ RENNspec, I can look forward to ESS parts not fitting correctly (read: items too short etc)? It's not a simple case of waiting a week and picking the car up perfect? There are issues that the 3 of you have had where parts have to be modd'd to work right. Sounds like ESS needs to iron out the bugs still. Please correct me if I'm wrong here b/c I'm thinking of going this route.

Another issue is the intake pipe going into the supercharger can easily hit the hood. Beedub warned me about this, and I warned my shop, but it turns out it is hitting. It's already worn a spot on the intake pipe and my hood, so I'm proud to be sporting a folded up paper towel taped to my hood in the spot that it hits when the engine moves torques Video of the screeching, which did occur again after startup, is uploading. It actually takes almost 3 seconds to start making the noise after the engine starts...and lasts at least a solid 4 seconds. But then it goes away completely, and I have never heard it on a warm start. |

Here's the video. My beloved mom helpfully comments about how obviously terrible the noise is, lol.
Thinking the problem through a little more, due specifically to the fact that the belt is a serpentine instead of one that only drives the S/C, I can now imagine that the noise is the belt slipping (most likely on a pulley other than the S/C). I am not certain everything that this belt drives, but either the oil pump or the power steering pump might have an early resistance that builds up and fades after they get up to speed. This might also explain why it only happens when cold. Questions: 1) What other accessories does the belt that drives the S/C also drive? 2) I have a feeling that my shop tensioned the belt as much as could be done without the right pulley, but how can I check and possibly tighten it further to see if it helps the problem? |

I would have gone ape shit nuts if I found out other people had the same issues of parts not fitting correctly and the damn company not resolving the issue BEFORE selling any more kits to people. 10g's isn't something to sneeze at (at least for me anyway).
Hope you get your pulley soon.

So its confirmed, 3 people are having issues with the IC pipe being too short. Don't worry Mike, its not a HUGE deal, jsut something thats not plug and play

I was just wondering if something like the R.Eng engine mounts might help with this. They are supposed to be 5mm lower than OE mounts.

I only have 400 miles since VT2 install, but no issues. The folks at IND seemed quite happy with how all went together. Basically 2 day install with one additional day waiting for ECU to come back from Sweeden. They have installed quite a few ESS SC's in other models, but my stock 06 roadster was their first ZM I believe. No pulley issues. Nothing rubbing or leaking.

iphone..... that noise is the belt, you can actually see the belt jumping off the pulley if you look closely..... Honestly you shouldnt be driving your car at all imo.............. thats putting ALOT of stress on the s/c bearings....
Lets clear the vt2-500 issues up.... the intercooler piping does need alittle lengthening on some cars, other than that its complete plug and play, bear in mind its the same piping used on the m3 so it just needs alittle tweaking, some cars will need more than other but its imo no big deal at all, the s/c intake when fitted in the correct location WILL NOT touch the hoot AT ALL, i did warn you about this as youve refered to........ it needs to be nice and tucked into by the suspension turret...... it will never touch the hood in this location... The crank pulley WAS in my instructions, as have them in front of me as i type..... IMO its all down to the installers, both my installs for vt1 and 2 have been bang on........ The type of kits will always require different alterations from car to car, im 100% happy with my vt2 kit. Let me clarify my kit fits perfectly, no touching anywhere, hood or anything, great strutbrace clearance, great performance.... i couldnt be a happier ess customer.... come on guys, were adding a supercharger things will need to be tweaked, no car is the same. Mine has taken me a while to work out the little mods i needed to make but i now have a kit that fits like stock parts.... im about as happy as i could be. On top of everything the engine bay looks just awesome, i can look into it all day long............ iphone your crank pulley will solve your issues, the s/c intake will need to be adjusted to ensure correct fitment.... lower engine mounts will not work for us, we'll lower the i/c piping to the point where we wont be able to fit under trays back on...................... iphone ANYTHING i can do to help, im here bro.....
