Another brush with death...
Well...today is the closest I've been to being killed here in lovely south carolina. I was stopped at a light leaving my neighborhood in one of 2 left hand turn lanes. The light turns green so I start going (not even fast, just got it going and started to shift to second) and hear my wife say "ohmygod" so I look to my left and some fucking kid (had to be 16) driving a toyota tundra pickup is head right for me, and not slowing down. So in the 10 seconds or so that it felt like where I'm looking at this kid (probably more like .2 seconds)...I decide that if I don't move this kid is going to crash into me. So I hit the gas and dropped the clutch to get through the intersection before I got killed. He had to have been going 45-50 mph and I'm not sure he even realized he was going through a red light...cuz it wasn't even close and he wasn't slowing down. The only noise I heard was the sound of my tires slipping as I got out of the way.
FUCKING STUPID ASS KIDS! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH :finger: only 2 more weeks of south carolina drivers...only 2 more weeks of south carolina drivers...

Close call! Glad to hear you guys didn't get hurt! Not to stereotype or generalize... but speaking from personal experience over the last two years that I have lived in TN, I have noticed that a LOT of people out here are horrible drivers! Out here = TN, SC, NC, VA, & KY.

That's ridiculous. Very scary. Glad to hear nothing really bad happened.
But I don't understand how, if you were turning left, he could be coming at you from your left. Anyways, I have to say that when I was in Boston, the traffic was brutal, but the drivers were at least pretty good and not dangerous. |

something similar happened to me. I was at a red light and checking this woman in Starbucks. Light turns and I realise I am not in gear!! Put it in gear and this Buick goes through the light at a fast pace!! Lucky that I was checking out the blonde and the car was not in gear.

I'm always super-afraid of getting into collisions with trucks. If he had smoked you from the side then you can pretty much say bye bye due to the difference in vehicle heights.
Glad to hear that the power of your car helped save your life. How's the wife taking it? |

4 since I got here (6 months). This was the worst one tho.
I think afterwards mywife and I were in shock...like did that just happen kinda thing. If that truck had hit us...it probably woulda been almost a direct hit with my door, so I'm sure that would have felt good. Afterwards I thought about turning around and pulling him out of the truck and kickin his ass...but then I probably would have been the one in trouble. Whatever, my mom thinks he was probably on drugs and I wouldn't doubt it. Anyway, if any of you come to Columbia, SC for any reason. Be careful...

Sunday night, i was at a light and the guy infront of me went and some guy ran a red light at like 50 mph. The guy in front of me had a slow car and wasnt even able to get into the intersection yet. So he was ok. If i was in front of him I propably would have pulled out a bit quick and got hit. And Monday night my girl was driving home from work and same thing happen she was the car in back and the car infront had green and pulled out and got T boned. This was on Rt 1 where the limit is 55mph Too...

Had I been in my 626 I definately would have been hit due to the longer car and slower acceleration.

Actually I found Boston fairly easy to drive in. It's an aggressive/defensive style not to differently than my experiences in Stuttgart. Although this time, I decided to forgo the rental car and take the S-bahn everywhere. I'm typing this while kicking back at my hotel in Boeblingen.

RC...thanks for the concern. I'm much more comfortable driving in Boston than I am here. I'm a New England native and I lived in Boston for 4 years of college. And believe me...I'm looking forward to the traffic there compared to the wreckless driving here. Not that Boston doesn't have it's share of wreckless drivers...but this area is the worst i've ever experienced.

Since takedown is a little slow...I thought I'd recreate the scene for y'all. The pictures are simplistic but I think easy to understand. I used Powerpoint to create it. There are other details I'm leaving out like the cars stopped at the light, the mustang and other cars behind me etc. (Portions of this broadcast not affecting the outcome have been edited...hahahah)
Anyway. Slide 1. This is what everything looks like when I see the light turn green. The skinny oval is a motorcycle...the wider oval is me. I put the car in first and get it rolling... Slide 2. My wife says OMG and I look to my left and here comes the kid in the pickup tryin to kill me. I'm in between 1 & 2 right now. Slide 3. I hit the gas, drop the clutch and get a little sideways as I escape his attempt at vehicular manslaughter. (My wife screams) Slide 4. The aftermath. I look over my wife and say holy shit, can you believe that guy? After this point I don't even see him anymore. From there my wife calls her mom and tells her how pissed she is and I think about ripping that lil kid from his pickup and knocking the shit out of him. I also discuss it briefly with the biker at the next light. The memory continues makes me angry.

Wow, you have waaay too much time on your hands. More than me!
Now I see. I thought you originally meant that somebody ran the red from oncoming traffic. I didn't think you meant running a red from that side! That is absolutely brutal! I've never seen anything like that before. |
