Yes and no.

Can they go 15k between oil changes, and is this the interval BMWNA states? Yes. But they're a business, and in the business of selling new cars, not giving out free oil changes more often then needed.
Most people who have an intention of holding onto their car (or just keeping it in peak condition) will change the oil every 7.5k miles.

Your service indicator will tell you how many miles to service, but it is based on 15k miles AND fuel used (how hard you drive it). BMW will change the oil under warranty according to that indicator or once per year if you are not getting the miles necessary to let the service indicator say it's time for service.

IMHO 7500 miles between changes is very cheap insurance for the engine.

Old topic. It's really very simple. 15,000 mile oil changes became standard when BMW started paying for the service. They are concerned about getting you through the warranty period without issues, not concerned about the long-term well being of the car. Before BMW started paying for maintenance, but after their switch to fully synthetic oils, they recommended every five thousand miles, even for the M cars using the 10W-60. I change mine myself every 5,000, then take it to the dealer for my freebie every 15,000.

Really? You could probably trick you car into thinking it never needs an oil change then! I wonder if it would fall for it....

Weirdly, but that's with a different car, an 03 M5, I have to change oil every 3000 miles. The car just eats it. If I were u, I would change oil in about 4k intervals. Much better for the engine. At least you know it's in peak condition all of its time.

My Z4 2.5i is a little over three years old (14K). I've had BMW change the oil every year as I don't put on that much mileage. My '02 325i is going on 7 years (48K). I've had BMW change the oil annually while under warranty and then I've done the change myself for the other years. Both cars are running as smoothly you could want and niether has ever burned any oil in that year's period. I'm happy with an annual change, but I guess if the cars are driven real hard, perhaps a change at 7.5K would be fine.

My '03 M5 (66K miles) doesn't eat oil at all. I change the oil about every 5K, which is generally about every 6 mo.

I know the early E39 M5's had a tendency to burn oil, but after '01, it was much less of an issue.
