Knocking/creaking noise with chassis flex
Hi guys,
So every time the chassis becomes unsettled like when going over bumps (not from shock compression or rebound) and such there is a heavy creaking that turns into a much worse knocking or banging type noise depending on the size of the bump or how much the chassis is flexing. My idea is this : I just moved into a house with a very messed up driveway and every time I drive into the garage it involves going over a very ridiculous small hill/bump that leaves part of the car suspending in air as I drive over it. At first it was just small creaking noises which my m3 still makes which i just figured is the chassis flexing (no big deal right?) Is it possible that this caused a crack or break in the subframe or something of that sort? Maybe something has to be torqued down? Strut mounts? idk... Car is going to shop on monday but figured I get some ideas beforehand and ask how dangerous it is to drive a car over a messed up driveway like that. I guess if it causes enough chassis flex with consistent creaking every day in an out its a matter of time until the pressure breaks something right? Where is the creaking coming from? Does it sound like it's from the dash?
My guess would be the strut braces needing torquing at the firewall.

+1 on strut braces. They need to be at 31 or 32 ft lbs and they tend to come loose. I put blue loctite on mine as recommended by other forum members and retightened and have not experienced the knocking/creaking anymore. Another thing is to check the sway bar end links in the front. Also check the rear strut braces underneath the car, those have a tendency to strip out the threads themselves.

I am getting this noise and my strut braces are very f'n tight.
No broken welds on either the strut towers or the firewall mount. When I remove the strut braces completely the noise is gone. So I know it has something to do with the strut braces but can find the cause. Does anyone know what else I can try next?
