3.0si Sports Suspension - How Can I Tell If a Car Has It?

Looking at 3.0si's, because I'm trying to save a few dollars by not getting an M. When looking at used, how can I tell if a car has the sports suspension? Also were the M seats part of the package or separate?

IIRC, The si doesn't have a "sport suspension" option per se, that comes on the vehicle from the factory. There are certainly many aftermarket systems available. And, it could be that you could upgrade suspension using BMW parts from other vehicles that share components with the Z4. The sport package option includes staggered 18" 108 style rims, the "M" style seats with integrated headrest, and the sport button that when on, increases throttle response and changes the electric power steering to give more "road feel". This being on a 6 speed manual. The auto transmission guys can chime in with help here as it might be different. BTW, I do have an 08 si rdstr available if you are interested.

Thanks, I guess I was thinking sport package. Would love to look at yours, but won't be buying for another few months. Thanks again for the great info.

Btw, I went and looked at your car for sale. Just what I'll probably be looking for. Wish it were Feb/March!! GLWS. Maybe you'll still have it when I'm ready to pull the trigger.

Do a VIN Check search on this forum. There are several web sites that will show how the car was equipped when it left the factory.

it is option code '704'... have your local dealer run the VIN to see if you have it.

another option is to check with the owner's manuals. a lot of owners put the original window sticker with that (me included).

Is that different for different years? I have a 04 with the sport package and that DOES come with the M suspension - or at least all the parts I have changed/worked on have been "M" sized and I have to order the M parts for it. The only exception were the FCAB - mine were not offset like I see the M's are. I am not sure when a non-M is listed has having the M suspension - what all that means, but my sways and things are all the M for sure.

Visually, the car will have staggered 18" wheels and a sport button next to the shifter, though these can both be retrofitted. I was under the impression the sports package included different suspension components...

The "M suspension" in the non-M Z4 is not at all like the suspension in the Z4M. I believe the same aftermarket rear shocks will work for each, but that's about it. You can see the differences on realoem.com.

The Si sport suspension (M suspension) package came with the following as compared to the standard suspension: "sport" button, lower ride height (shorter springs), different shocks, larger diameter sway bars. As mentioned above the Non-M Si sport package uses different components than the Z4M.

^This^

As an example the front sway bar diameters are 24mm for stock suspension, 25mm for M-Sport, and 27mm for the M. Rears are 18mm for stock, 19mm for M-Sport, and 21.5mm for M. Wheels for the stock Z4 are 17 x 8 square set up, (although there were a lot of staggered 18" wheel options for the stock Z4 without adding the M-Sport suspension), 18 x 8 front, 18 x 8.5 rear for the M-Sport (most common wheel for package was the Style 108), and 18 x 8 front, 18 x 9 rear for the M.

This is interesting information. Nice to hear that with additional HP in the 3.0si, the associated components affecting performance were addressed also.

Another way to tell if your Si has the sport suspension is to place a dime in the middle of the road and run over it at about 60mph.

If you have the Sport suspension, you'll feel it!!

Have you ditched yours? I've thought many times of pulling the trigger at the next change, but am sure that - for the first time in years - my wife would be driving the car and have a flat.
Does it really make THAT much difference, with the new RunFlat improvements and all?

It's like night and day. Ditch the run flats. Even my wife can tell the difference.

What did you replace the RunFlats with?
Did you also ditch the tire pressure monitors/system?
Or can they be retrofitted to non-RunFlats?
Thanks

Runflats gone. Replaced with Hankook V12 (Good budget performance tire, but there are better performance options). The improvement in ride is primarily a function of side wall stiffness and the pressures you run (runflats have very stiff sidewalls), so there is some variation. Regardless of what tires you choose, you will feel the (improved) ride quality. Added benefit, non-runflats are less expensive.

Still have the original TPMS units. Can be coded out if you want.

I've got Hankook v12s. TPMS are still being used.

Thanks. That's two referrals for the V12s. I see that with the current rebate at the Rack, they are nearly $300 cheaper for the set of four in my flavor than the Pilot Super Sports that I have (and like a lot) on a couple of my other cars (the E90 still has Run Flats).

So to get back on point, is the suspension upgrade discussed here associated with the "si" model upgrade and not the referred to "sport package" option? That all si's have the beefier suspension regardless of having the sport package or not.
