Everywhere else, 1 "litre" of oil is exactly 1000 mL. The confusion is that BMW sells oil in both Liters and Quarts. The 5W30 oil that is used in most BMW comes in 1 Quart bottle = 946mL as pictured. The 10W60 used in ///M engines comes in 1 Liter bottle = 1.05 Quarts, also pictured here. Oil fill for our S54 engine calls for 5.5L, which should be approx. 5.8qt...so most people would just round up to 6qt and call it the day. But since the 10W60 comes in Liter, these mechanics are actually pouring 6L (approx. 6.34qt), which is a good 0.5 liter overfilled. |

No funny math .... Depending on manufacturer oil is packaged or relabeled for Canadian market using either imperial or US volume measurements converted to liters or in actual litre bottles. So can get oil in other than one litre bottles with 1000 ml of oil. My one quart (US) bottle of oil sold in Canada for the Canadian market has 946 ml of oil. Fact of life living next to US market. While more common to see litre bottles it's not uncommon to see the "smaller" volume bottles. While the difference appears small, over 6 or 7 bottles it adds up. You have to confirm the bottles volume measurement and not assume its a litre.

here's a heads up:
most indy shops don't make a lot of money doing oil changes. do the math: 6 quarts of our oil costs ~$55 wholesale and maybe $3 for a filter? if they're charging you $100 for an oil change, and your car is in there for an hour, they're only making $42 an hour, when they normally charge $75 labor rates (higher for dealership). If you go to a sketchy shop, and they don't have the right oil, they may put in the next best thing 0w40, 5w40... something similar, but not as expensive. They're trying to get your car in and out of there as fast as possible, and they're usually doubling or tripling up on cars doing changes at the same time to make up that money gap. They're not concerned about getting the oil to the exact level. If they're any good, they'll look it up on the computer, which will tell them how much they need to put in. but that's how much they'll put in. if their computer says 6 quarts, they'll put in 6. if it says 5.5, they'll put in 5.5. They're not going to waste their time doing the whole song and dance of running your car for a minute, and double checking the dipstick again after 3 minutes. Oil is the lifeblood of the engine. if you love your car, you'll take the time to do it right, and do it yourself. it's not hard, and if you go to a few local car meets or check your local zpost section, there are plenty of people that i'm sure would be glad to help you out. |
