Tire sizes for new wheels

OK, I am getting the EC7s from the GB soon and for now, I am going to put the stocks on them, pretty certain sizes are fine. I am picking up:

18x8.5et35 fronts - stock tires are 225/45
18x9.5et22 rears - stock tires are 255/40

As soon as I can afford them, possibly even at the same time if I can make it work, I am going to pick up PSSs. I know I can obviously pick up the same size tires in PSS but I am wondering if there is a benefit to a different size than stock.

Thoughts?

When I spoke with Joe he said the largest I should go is 235 front and 265 rear for that rim size. I plan on going with that eventually as my current rubber wears out. Might be a while though. Otherwise sticking with stock sizes for now.

HAVING SAID THAT.

If you can manage to break the traction loose on the stock tires regularly enough on the street, you're basically a statistic waiting to happen, IMO. There's too many variables that's out of your control for any meaningful increase in performance to be gained.

Now, if you're telling me that you don't care about performance but are after the looks from the honeys because, you know, chicks dig FAT tires? I'd tell you to go ahead and run 245F/275R width tires because that 20mm width is visibly noticeable. Other than that, any upgrade in width compared to a compound upgrade is meaningless because the additional width will only buy you extra heat capacity, heat capacity in which you will NEVER be able to exceed on the street.

So, assuming I go with 235 and 265, the next question of course is height of the tires.

For fronts, if I go with 235/40, looks like the overall diameter is .5inch less. 1010 tire calculator shows this as a 2.2% variance over stock (within their 3% recommendation). I also, therefore, assume this allows me more room for lowering...maybe even adding a spacer to push the et35 wheel out a little. 45s are bigger and will likely hurt when it comes to lowering.

For the rears, if I go with 265/35, diameter is .7inch less which equals a 2.8% variance. 40s would be .3inch (1.21%) bigger...not sure if this is as big a deal so I could go with either size here I think.

Thoughts?

235/40 and 265/35 will work, so will 245/40 and 275/35. Course you can go with stock sizes too. Benefit? Hack's post touches on this. The wider tires give the rims some protection, and IMO they look good! The red car in this thread has your rim size and 245/40 275/35 tires.

Cool. It's really a matter of how it looks as any of those sizes in PSS will be quite sticky.

I have 245/40 and 265/40 on OEM suspension and wheels.

These are OEM sizes for M3....lots of lightly used tires available.

I have 18x8.5et35 fronts/18x9.5et22 rears, M359s with 235/40 & 265/35 PSS, no issues whatsoever. Great combination, perfect tire size for the rim width.

Thanks John. Have you done any lowering or spacers (or both!)? Just wondering about clearances to do so.

Thx

No spacers, I have the Eibach Pro Kit springs on the car, no rubbing at all.
