Walk me off the ledge.
My '08 3.0si coupe has 43k miles and is automatic transmission
Someone today offered me $25K I accepted and the check will soon clear my bank but I'm having second thoughts. I'm being offered way more than blue book so I thought it was a no brainer. The car is my weekend car not daily driver but I'm tired of the insurance, registration, old technology and future costs will add up I'm sure Bad decision to sell? |

Tired of the insurance? Our 2000 wrangler full coverage is only $50/6months less than my 03 and $50 more on the 07 e86 than the 03. My moms ford escape is double the e86. When not driving I switch to seasonal insurance on them which is $50ish-$70ish/6 months pending car If not your daily you should’ve checked on storage insurance which covers theft and fire. My agent has gotten to know me well shuffling cars around on insurance. Being where we live it’s common, as why insure full coverage on a sports car or classic car in the depth of winter. You did sell it for the going rate for sure.
The old tech/lack of is what’s driving people to these cars though. Even a good friend that is a service advisor at the dealer by me is ashamed to admit the brand is getting away from the ultimate driving machine and more about the roundel status symbol. In the future cost aspect, you’ll always have future costs in future car so it’s all money no matter that car or the next. Last edited by Piper1; 06-17-2022 at 08:47 PM.. |

If it were me and it was a manual, the decision would be a little harder, but being an automatic, I wouldn't walk away from that offer. That amount is getting near E86 ///M territory.

Forget the blue, black or red book values, those are really for dealers and wholesalers.
As everyone on this forum knows, these are cult cars now and will fetch higher prices than the book values. Coupes are sought after now and $25K for an automatic is pretty good money.

Not a flame...
The "old technology" is EXACTLY why my E86 3.0si is never leaving my fleet. It's supposed to be a driver's car and the "technology" is in the manual gear box, engine, and suspension. The manual transmission is an excellent theft-prevention device. The dashboard has zero distractions from the act of driving. It's enclosing and loud inside, filled with melodious intake, exhaust, and gear-wine noises along with tire noise with the rears just inches from your ears. You have to concentrate driving it; it's a complete mobile off-the-grid deprivation chamber. And the mirrors are positioned perfectly. If you keep your phone on when driving it, you're doing it wrong

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

^ Yeah, what grannyknot said....these are cult cars indeed. If the goal is being transported from A to B, get a sub-compact throwaway Kia or Hyundai. And the fact that one of the descriptions is that (Z4M's) are "analog" provides proof why they do not have paddle-shifters on the steering wheel, why they have a third pedal, and why there is a small shift knob that must be actuated to propel the mass.

Sold my MR a few years ago and been regretting it since. Started following price trends recently to buy another MR and the market is slowly moving in the right direction so you should be able to buy a similar Z in a year or so for less. If you want to upgrade an MR wouldn't be out of the question.
