New Owner! Some questions...
Hello!
I am the new owner of a 2006 Black on Black M coupe with carbon stitched trim. The car just hit 80k miles and is my daily driver. I have been looking for a coupe for a while and finally picked one up about a month ago. When I purchased the car I had it PPI'ed at the dealership I work at and a few small things came up. These issues were immediately taken care of after I purchased the car. After a month of ownership I have a couple of concerns. 1. On cold starts the car starts, goes to cold start idle (just over 1k rpm) sputters to about 500-600 rpm, then kicks back up. Is this a sign of a potential issue to come? 2. The clutch makes a good bit of chatter at low speeds. This happens while maneuvering in a parking lot or even going from 1st to 2nd. also the gear box seems quite loud as well. 3. Is it normal for the car to not want to go into 2nd while the wheels loose traction in first? 4. Finally, Is the only cure for the sloppy/jerky 1st-2nd shift to pop out the CDV? Thanks in advanced guys! |

1st to 2nd gear changes have always been a problem at lower RPMS. Mine shifts great into second above 4500 RPM.
Removing the CDV isn't going to help IMO. I think the noises you here are the typical dual mass pressure plate noises

I agree with the previous poster. Most of what you list are common issues for M's. Cold start idle drops are an issue in mine as well. As long as it isn't stalling you are probably within normal limits. You can help the shifting issues with a different shift knob and new transmission mounts. Some get an SSK as well. The transmission is not the strongest link in the M for sure, but the noises you hear at low speeds are likely the dual mass flywheel. If you shut the car off with the clutch out in neutral it will rattle like crazy. i always have the clutch depressed when shutting down to curb the noise.

You may be able to clean up some of the sloppiness in the shifter with new transmission mounts. I just installed some, replacing the OEM with UUC, and it greatly improved the overall feel. Made it more notchy and assured.
I get the low speed clunking as well, don't think that's anything to worry about. |

Re shifting, Some of this is just getting to know the car.
When clutching don't remove throttle too soon, consciously delay it a little while the clutch is being pushed in. Timing of the shift makes a big difference. For the smoothest transitions I find that when clutch is 3/4 down, start the shift action to neutral. Then just as you hit bottom stroke of the clutch you are already gating the next gear. If you still have the OE clutch stop, pick up one that's more solid with better adjustment. I've tried a few and like the R.Eng one the best. ...and like mentioned above don't lolly around shifting at low RPMs; 3500 and up gives you much smoother shifts.

ok the 1/2nd shift can be alittle jerky but honestly..... i don't even get it anymore , you just learn to be really smooth and precise with your inputs, however all the other things you mention my car has NEVER done.

Congrats on the purchase and welcome! Good advice above. I agree with ZHP knob makes a difference. I'd get rid of the CDV as well - probably won't help your 1st to 2nd degree shifts but I hate those things.
Regarding the 1st to 2nd shifts, there are multiple threads dedicated to this if you have time. I bought my first Z4M coupe new and occasionally I'd get a 1st to 2nd denial with a not pleasant grinding sound. The dealer bent a front strut on that one (joy riding ), so it went back to BMW. Unfortunately the car was not being produced by that time, so after a year searching I found my current coupe with 9K miles in 2011. First and only mods: ZHP knob and CDV delete. After 4 years (now at 22K miles) I've never had a 1st to 2nd denial. I'm still not sure what the difference is; perhaps that with the second coupe I am just more familiar with the characteristics of the car. GL

I've come to grips that this gearbox just does not like to be rushed. +1 on delaying removing the throttle on shifts. Do this after you've removed the CDV and you'll be shifting smooth as silk, even below 3K.
