Should I get a Z4m?
I fell in love with the Z4M as soon as I saw a Coupe for the first time and knew I had to own one. I have the means to get one however I don't know if I should.. yet. You see I'm in the Canadian Forces and I'm posted for the next 5 years in a small town in Canada. I'd modify the car but I'm 4 hours from a city. I can do medium level DIY and I'm not sure if my local mechanic will work on BMWs. I live in flatlands so there are only straight roads, nowhere to test the handling so I would love to supercharge as speed is king here. The roads here aren't the best and they're covered in snow for half the year with temperatures down to -50 celcius and this would be my DD.
The paint on my Civic was fine for years when I lived back home but in the 6 months I've been here there are now paint chips all over the front bumper and hood from rocks on the road. I'm just scared I will get one of the 1800 coupes in North America and it die prematurely from the roads and snow |

Don't do it. You are going to destroy that Z. Nuuuuuu. A DD nuuuuuu. Walk away I know is tempting and is a awesome art work in a car but don't ruin the artwork xD.

^^^ What he said. Buy a beater AWD car or 4WD truck, put winter tires on it, and don't worry what happens to it. Get the Z4 for those other days. In your situation there won't be too many of them, true. But your situation will change, and when it does you'll still have a pristine Z4MC that's worth at least what you paid for it.

In your situation I think you need a daily beater.

i dont think a z4m is ready for you lol.....
i think you need either a garage to keep it inside and dd it in less torturous conditions or buy a beater. hold off for now and wait...you wont nejoy the car all beat up and damaged driving through blizzards

All the above
Sounds like you have good reasons NOT to get an M right now

I picked up a very low mileage Z4MC this past year, and had every intention of driving it daily (35 mile commute round trip, suburbs) within three months I realized what a disservice I was doing to the car. Paint chips aside, the never-ending anxiety of other drivers, pedestrians, vandals and the inconvenience of space limitations forced my hands to buy an inexpensive "primary driver". Now I use my MC on fridays and weekend fun times.
If you can get one, by all means, do so, but maybe think about keeping the civic for the workhorse. |

Me however, I would probably have bought one since there were very few made and finding a nice one is getting harder. I would also buy a civic. Good luck!

I decided on a 335xi as my dd here as I still want a fast BMW and put on 3M for the front although I won't mind as much if that paint chips.
One day I will get that beautiful Z4MC |

The E9X 335Xi is a really sturdy platform, should be even sturdier than the E46 330Xi and there's guy in Sweden putting out over 800 HP with the stock drivetrain. The engine is fully built though and the clutch is beafier of course.
If you decide to go bananas that is. Last edited by Westersund; 11-14-2015 at 08:42 AM.. |

The Z4M is my favorite car of all time. Mine is basically 10 years old now and it's more fun to drive day after day. As long as you find a good example and maintain it correctly, you will be overjoyed with your purchase.

Get a non-M and DD it. They're cheap enough at this point to not have to worry about paint chips, etc, and as long as your roads are cleared winter driving on snow tires should be fine. I had my 2.5 in Boston for three years and drove it year-round with no issues.

I was in grad school at the time and didn't HAVE to drive every day, which helped. Still I drove around 3-4 times a week at least, and never had a problem is snow. They do a good job clearing it up pretty much immediately after each storm. That said, winter driving in Boston is definitely not recommended if you treasure the car. To me it was a fun car to drive year-round, at a price point that didn't justify buying a beater just to keep the Z in pristine condition. |
