Finally drove a Z4M Coupe

I've been circling the drain on buying a Z4MC for a while now, and I finally went out and drove one.

It was incredible! There is no doubt this is an awesome car!

That being said, I think I've made up my mind to wait for the 2010 TTI6 Z4, retractible hardtop. The main reason is that I love the looks of the coupe, but I am greatly enjoying having a convertible (Jeep Wrangler).

I may consider the Z4M Convertible, but that would simply be so that I would have an M rather than a regular BMW.

What do you guys think?

I think the new TT Z4 will be bigger and heavier than the current model, so you shouldn't expect as much performance or fun factor wise.

Okay, I just read this three times. I hope you were trying not to make any sense because I am confused...

The Z4M (coupe or roadster) will be much more fun than the newer non M even though it is a retractable hardtop for the reasons mentioned above.

It is all about what you really want more. Unless I got a great deal on the M I might just wait for the 2010 as well because it is a new body style (better resale) and it is the first time the Zed has had a turbo.

I wouldnt be surprised if the Z4 is a little bit lighter. Those ''in the know'' hinted at a weight loss despite the hardtop. They hinted at a weight loss on the new 7 series too. Despite it being longer, wider, and having a bigger motor, it still lost 80lbs!

I wouldnt be suprise if the performance of the TTI6 Z4 is very similar to the Z4M Coupe. Insideline did an article where the 335i beat the E46 M3 in every ''measurable way.'' Time will definitely tell how this plays out.

There's no right or wrong answer. Go with your gut.

I'm picking up my Z4 M Coupe this weekend. When I decided it was time to replace my 330i, I looked at the Z4 Coupe, Z4 M Coupe, E46 M3, 135i, and E92 335i.

I kept coming back to the M cars. My mentality was - I could buy any of the others and mod them into the car I want; OR I can buy the M, which is the car I want. Obviously I decided on the Z4 M, because I felt the M3 was still a compromise of practicality. The Z is what it is, a two seater sports coupe/roadster.

The reasons I decided not to wait for the 2010 E89:
- folding hard top (I like my coupes with a fixed roof)
- lack of proper e-brake handle
- S54 engine FTMFW
- unsure about long term durability of the new N54 motor
- likely increased weight
- definite increased price
- M variant probably not released till 2012
- I want a performance car before the electronic gadgets completely take away the experience

The N54 is an amazing engine, and yeah, the 335i provides E46 M3 like performance in a more driveable setup. I'm sure the next Z with that engine will provide the same comparison to the Z4 M Coupe.
But it's those unmeasurable qualities that matter to me. I care less about 0-60 and 1/4 mile times; and more about the way the engine makes the hairs on my neck stand up. The car's not just about the engine, it's about the sum of the parts. On the M cars they just come together perfectly.

You can't over-estimate the M factor on these cars versus the TTI6.

I think it's really the convertible factor that is causing me problems. I love the Z4MC, but the roadster doesn't quite do it for me. That's why I'm hoping I'll like the hard-top retractable.

I'm really hoping the the TTI6 will have the breaks & steering wheel from the 135 Sport package.

N54's are STILL going through high pressure fuel pumps like crazy, 2 years after intro. Read some of the horror stories of week-old cars failing, guys going through 3 or 4 of them, lemon buy-backs, etc. Continues unabated with the 1-series and brand new 3's, proving that the problem still isn't solved. And those suckers cook the oil at about 250f in "normal" operation.

No thanks. I regretted not picking up a new E46 M3 before it was too late, but redeemed myself with the Z4MC.

Nothing to regret, I went from an 05 M3 I took deliver on in late 04, and got an 07 Mcoupe. The Mcoupe gets ALOT more looks and questions evnen thought I live in a major metropolitan area in California. As most already know, the S54 engine won 'Best International Engine' Award 6 years in a row for a reason. By 04-05 all the bugs were worked out and I think it is one of the best normally aspirated engines ever.

Besides talk of the new Z having the twin turbo, there is some talk saying it may have the M3's V-8. Not only would it be fun in anyone's book it would be faster than today's Z's even thought about being!

Well if there was a new Z4M it would get the M3-V8. But, it's debatable if/when that's going to happen.

Based on early reports & pictures, that fat pig looks like Rosie O'Donnell standing next to Jessica Simpson, comparing it to the current car. It'll need that V8 just to get out of its own way. To me (and many among us), a large part of the charm of the current car (and the Z3 too for that matter) is its size.. unlike a lot of "modern" machinery, which has gone progressively more porky for years (look at the current Corvette.. sheesh!), the Z3/Z4 represents an era gone by - the smaller, more nimble (if relatively heavy for its size) sports car. I can't wait for our cars to become last year's "old" car.

Even if the new car is lighter and has a nearly equal power, I doubt it will handle like an ///M car, until they come out with a proper M version. Ugh, and with that electronic e-brake, it might as well be a jaguar.

To me, the M Coupe is the only current BMW I could see Bruce Willis driving in a Sin City movie. Its raw, unpractical, (gets 6MPG when you go canyon carving) and an all around an amazing experience.

M cars aren't just engines. Learn that quick to save from being disappointed.

As well as the fuel pump issue, the TTI6 does have heat issues, even with oil coolers, so I don't think it will see a lot of track time unless some serious oil cooling takes place.
