Z4M crash
I was taking a corner on the highway @ 60 mph and there was suddenly stopped traffic that I couldn't forsee before the corner, couldn't downshift quick enough due to surprise, the brakes seemed to have my car skid forward and i had the DSC turned off, i am using axxis ultimate pads, did it happen to anyone before ? the pavement had some sort of light dust, looks a little marbly like the tyres would have a hard time gripping on such a surface. NITTO NT05
I am very frustrated and sad about this misfortune. thank god for no obvious mechanical issues and no heavy causalities and all it needs is body work. probably gonna attempt to change the color as most parts will be exchanged. the left rear wheel is broken in half also, their are sportline rotary forged wheels, they are so strong they ripped the wheel and suspension out of another car. Sorry to hear about the crash but glad to hear you're fine and no one else was hurt.
It sounds like the brakes worked fine but with DSC off and the conditions (dust/pavement), there was not enough traction and you lost control. Good luck, hope you fix her up real soon!!!

No i didn't it's my fault for not concentrating on the road till it's too late + road conditions.
You should really work on your people skills mate, I'd appreciate it if your next reply can come out a little more comforting as I am the one who crashed his M not you sitting on the other side of the world. and for god's sake when someone asks you for a favor in a PM, at least have the decency to reply that you don't wanna do it. |

Shame man, but at least you are ok and so are the others involved. I am sure you will bring your M back to its former glory. Good luck

I don't like it kicking in and modifying how I should drive my car, that's just personal preference, even if it was off, the DSC couldn't have prevented the crash as the main reason for the crash is that on a highway there shouldn't be stopped traffic without a warning, not to mention a stopped traffic on turn that you cannot see.

If you haven't spun your car DSC wouldn't have made any difference. Then it's just a matter of too fast, too sudden, not enough traction (under braking)..... so just bad luck.
The only thing you could have done is reduce speed in corners you can't oversee. All the damage I can see are on seperate body panels, so there is no structural damage I think. But a lot of damage anyway. Luckily no one got hurt.

Don't drive faster than you can see. It's not bad luck; it's about thinking rationally.

Does DSC really affect straight line braking? I thought it was to prevent wheelspin during acceleration and to prevent rotating the car while cornering and acceleration.
I drive with DSC off all the time because while I don't spin routinely the wheels or go sideways around corners, it does seem to kick in too early IMO. Honest question, is that really such a bad thing? |

Why is your first inclination to downshift? You're not powering out of a turn. Your primary concern is to stop ASAP and avoid the traffic in front of you. Clutch and brake in, nothing else.

sorry to see it happen man. Sounds like one of these freak instances when you just weren't ready for it until it was too late.
From the pictures it doesn't look to be in too bad of condition (relatively speaking). Hope its back to its former glory soon! If it were me, i might consider switching from the Nt05 to something a little more conservative for the street, doesn't sound like it would have prevented the accident, but hey, it couldn't have hurt. |

Learned to downshift and play out the clutch while braking hard to modulate some stopping bias toward the rear. I probably should "unlearn" that because I'm likely to undermine the ABS. As others have said, I've been driving with the DSC off for the past few weeks because it keeps kicking in when I just want to scratch a tire pulling out onto the highway. Now I'm torn. Glad everybody's OK, tikamak, and best of luck. Last edited by StickMon; 06-10-2013 at 11:52 PM.. |

Thanks to you all, this community is quite unique and i'm glad to own a Z4M.
60 mph on a turn on a HIGHWAY is not driving irresponsibly, that's the speed right to drive right there. i was listening to music with the AC on, not racing anyone minding my own business. I have a broken left rear wheel, broken trailing arm, the steering fluid is on the floor when i took it for the alignment center to get the suspension examined. the culprit is that i had no grip on the shitty road with dust, it was too hot for the tyres to grip well and the type of the pavement is kind of oily in this 34 deg weather, the corner I took was not designed properly as a few other cars almost hit me when following me, the stopped traffic was too near and highly unexpected to be that close, it could happen to anyone. The damage seems entirely on the body panels, no problem with the supercharger of chassis, even the headlight are still not broken. |
