I had a chat with my service advisor. BMW Canada has a bulletin on this. They recommend 91% Octane with <10% EtOH. They say that using >10% EtOH will not damage the car but will cause the starting issues just as GP20 says.

I had a farmer friend tell me that Ethanol is a huge scam because currently more fossil fuels are consumed to produce it than it's saving. I guess eventually this will change with improvements in technology.

Not many environmentalists are in favour of it.
It's politics plain & simple, ...looks like they're doing the green thing.

Yeah, I think that's exactly the situation.
Petrocan probably bumped they're blend recently to achieve the 5% yearly average.
They're probably pushing 10%

I'll let you know how it goes with the Shell V-Power

You can get a Shell Easy pay & attach your Air Miles # to it.

Yeah... we did at one time.
Over the years & various merge/aquisitions companies like Gulf, & BP disapeared.
IIRC the last of them disappeared when the government organized the PetroCan chain.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
:edit: from Wikipedia
Quote:
BP Canada began operations in 1948 and for many years was in retail operations until Petro-Canada emerged in 1975. BP Canada was created over the years from merger and spin-offs of number of companies:
* Hudson’s Bay Oil and Gas
* Dome Petroleum
* Amoco
* Crestar Energy
* CANMAR
* Syncrude
* Honolulu Oils
BP retail operations disappeared from Canada in the early 1980s and replaced by Petro Canada outlets.
Today BP operates as producer of natural gas and has operations in Alberta, British Columbia, East Coast and in the North. Its headquarters is in Calgary, Alberta with 1400 employees.
That's not the point.....
They're all adding ethanol here now. (Ontario)
It's the ethanol that's causing the problem.
Shell is the only option right now.
While not necessarily the point, it does play a factor in the fuel equation. I guess I'm less concerned about the ethanol (provided it's < 10%). It's getting more common to find ethanol in higher octane fuels like Sunoco's 94 because ethanol is a cheap and easy octane booster, and regulation boards are starting to mandate it anyway as it's "going to save the World". It's probably only a matter of time before Shell jumps aboard as well.
The reason I've bought into the whole Top Tier marketing gimmick is that, blended or not, BMW sets a standard for "quality" and "blesses" Top Tier fuels for having all the other good stuff that will help mitigate any issues. Before I bought my bimmers, I put whatever was available in the tank and had drivability issues every now and then that I attributed to lower quality gas and not necessarily ethanol. Since I've used Top Tier fuels (some with and some without ethanol, but always > 91 octane) I have never had the slightest stutter out of either of my cars.
No worries though, the best fuel to put in your tank is the one that makes you and your ride the happiest.
Oh... I agree completely re using a "Top Tier" fuel.
It's just that in *our* area we were using "Top Tier" & getting problems.
Shoud BMW Canada do something about this? They will either have to lobby for low EtOH gas or have to adjust their cars to deal with the new equation. I think they will have to make their cars capable of dealing with the new gasoline blends.
Side note - one reason not to keep the ///M forever!
I remember a young lady on z4um who forced BMW to take back her Z4MR in Michigan because she refused to travel to a top tier station to comply with BMW's maximum ethanol % standard. She was convinced something was wrong with the car and ended up getting a new Z4MR. Never quite understood what she was thinking. I think she was buying gas at a Quicky Mart or something...
