Talking aFe intake for Z4M - a MUST do mod (and some mpg discussion)

Just installed this morning... what a difference! the car growls under hard acceleration.. it's just intoxicating. And people seem to notice the car more than before

Also, I think it helps with the mpg. On the freeway, I usually get about 27-28mpg while cruising at 65-70mph. This morning it was 30mpg. Could be other factors (like wind)... Although, I found myself accelerating hard all the time to hear the car growl, so that doesn't help with mpg

Well, if anyone is thinking about it and not sure, I say go for it!

When I meet with other M Coupe fellas, I'll arrange a comparison video..

Downhill ... with a wind? I've never seen mileage that high.

im not so sure about intakes on these cars... bmw does an extremely good job engineering the stock one, I have my doubts it can be improved on.

What the intake improves is noise. I don't think it will add too much power etc. But you need to hear how the engine sounds with this intake.

I just did 150+ miles on the highway. A little city driving too. Avg 21.3 MPG. Maybe I have a lead foot.

Talked to Elroy at RPI a few months back. He said on a dyno the AFE and Gruppe M both lost some hp when combined with the RPI scoop. Just a heads up. They sound great though.

Well, so is it the intake, or the scoop causing the problem? Eh, I don't really care anyways. I prefer the noise it makes to couple hp. I have plenty

That's all I have been able to get, mixed highway/city. I couldn't find a way to make the readout only display the current MPG, only the average.

When I took out my charcoal filter I noticed my engine stumbled a little off and on. Put it back in and have not noticed the stumbling. Couldnt really tell you if I gained anything while out. Some say it will give you a 1 to 2 hp gain with a little bit more intake noise.

I agree, the stock intake is very good. But, the stock box has three filters vs. the AFe's single cone filter. I didn't notice a power gain or loss either way, but I'll let you know once the 110+ degree temps start setting in in a couple months. It seems to be a airflow vs. air temp argument.

Because of the vast improvement in sound, I'd say the AFe is one of the best bang-for-the-buck mods for an M. It made the car a lot more fun to drive, and it's only rowdy when your foot is to the floor (unlike an aftermarket exhaust). It really exaggerates that unique M gurgle/roar/wail/scream.

You wait until you see/hear/feel a GruppeM intake!

I had an AFE before my GruppeM and I would also agree the AFE is an awesome mod,
It sounds awesome, and even though only butt dyno certified it did feel like you picked up a few pony's,

The engine did breathe easier I noticed,

You can remove the carbon filter.

I would definitely have to hear it in person before I drop that amount of $.
I have heard and installed on other cars & TBH, wasn't a huge fan of the sound.
Maybe the S54 is different though

I had an aFe intake on my e46 M coupled with an ACS exhaust and I LOVED it. I will definately look to go with aFe again on the coupe, but probably with the RE Diablo.

wow that's pretty low. i drive a 60-40 split of highway/city and get i average 27mpg. cruising 65mph on the freeway i get about 32.

i'd also love to hear one of these AFE intakes, i think it may be the perfect touch to improve the sound of the M.

25-30mpg wowser.
Since owning the car, I have never got more than 20mpg, and that is with a lot of highway miles.
Must be the way I drive.
