GB: DKF Hangers - June 2014

Okay, so the GB is closed, but why can't I find this on the web any where to purchase individually?

Got a surprise today. I installed these a week or so ago, and still have the car on the lift doing other work. I hadn't even driven it with the hangers in place. I noticed one of the mufflers was hanging a little low, and upon further inspection, found BOTH of the stand-off bushings broken off!

I *think* I installed everything correctly, so I was quite surprised to see this failure. Comments? Check yours...

Here is the update from Doug - would have been good to know this before I installed.

Yes I see the problem. You tightened the bolt to tight. This is a common mistake my customers make. When you tighten the bolt you just compress the lock washer and go 1/4 turn more. And no more you can use a little lock tight if you are concerned about the nut backing off. If you tighten them to tight that is what happens. In the rubber about 3/8 of an inch from the end. There is a disk and the stud is attached to the disk. Same on other side. This is why the vibrations are not transmuted to the car. And why it is easy to pull them apart.

Ok, final update - for some reason, I did not get this email. Hopefully you all did...Doug just re-sent and I am posting here for reference:

THIS IS A DYI INSTALLATION TIP:
When installing the the isolators do not over tighten the nuts. The isolators and brackets were designed to just compress the lock washer then go ¼ turn more. Over tightening of the isolator will hinder the isolators ability to dampen the vibrations and could damage the isolator itself. We have chosen a specific type of lock washer so when it is compressed and the ¼ turn is added you will achieve the maximum damping effect from the isolator and no special tools would be required. If you have any questions please feel free to contact DKF for more technical advice if needed.

So what happens if you destroy the washer? Where do we get another one if its a special part?

Its not the washer ....its the black isolation part.
I'm pretty sure DKF has some stock for these.

@bjbstewart sorry hear that they broke on your install.
Maybe I'm wrong but didn't we talk about tightening torque for these somewhere????
....Maybe I'm remembering an old install notes thread

Yeah, Doug is sending me new ones. We talked about 14 ft lbs, but I think that is too much...

Glad to hear that Doug looked after you.

yeah 14lbs is definitely too much.
I remember something about; as long as the lock washer is flattened and use a little 'blue' loctite if you want more assurance that the wont come loose.

Noticed one of my exhaust tips moved. Upon inspection, both of DKF isolators were broken as well. I don't think I over tightened. I personally think the isolators can't handle the exhaust bouncing and the heat expansion that pushes the exhaust towards the rear. I replaced both with a bolt and a rubber isolator from a generic exhaust hanger from Auto Zone that I cut to fit. I'm hoping this lasts.

Ditto on the broken isolators. Ive had to replace four so far. If another one breaks I'll get a generic bolt like above

looking at how much the isolator flexes in general i think the heavy back mufflers will cause them to split anyway, i can see my lightweight RPI setup and the isolators looks under considerable stress, i have not over Tq'd mine. A more robust solution is needed....

I bought them and didn't end up using them due to the thread pattern inconsistency, and I didn't want to cut my stock part just in case I decided to sell it some day.
