I happened to see this when browsing around this evening. Searched for this thread to post and see you had found it already. BMW Motorsport placed X-over in section 1. Note where the O2 sensors are located, just after the junction of headers to section 1. If I had full version of Adobe, I could post a pic of this at http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...portparts.aspx (Catalog 2008 Z4.pdf, page 37), but do not and can not.

May be more to this story than just a dismissal, as the S54 pulses should be evenly matched by exhaust header bank. I haven't found the exact firing order for the S54, but the two common straight-6 firing orders of: 1-5-3-6-2-4 or 1-4-2-5-3-6 both yield pulses happening every 240 degrees of crank rotation for the front 3 vs back 3 cylinders. Thus a X-over close to headers in section one would join up to generate a push/pull ehaust effect every 120 degrees of crank rotation.

Just as a matter of effect for some readers, if the engine is running at 8,000 RPM, it is only generating 2,667 firing pulses per minute.

I'm planing on doing that but I want to add 100 CEll's metallic cat before the X or before the mufflers and with the AA headers + Eisenmann muffler, maybe a resonator (because I don't want it to be that loud) and then see what happens.

don't do it, You will loose dynamic cylinder pressure on a non-Vx engine, causing miss fire of the cylinders.

here is something that you may want to look at.

I posted a thread about it.
