I know what tekmoe is talking about. I use to have a CBR600 and there was just no torque on the bottom end. You could give it full throttle at 3k and it just wouldn't move. But there were benefits to having less torque than a liter bike, i.e. you didn't have to worry about going into an unintentional wheelie or breaking the rear end loose. You could always crank down and give it full throttle and not have to worry about anything. Also, on tight canyon roads I would just let it sing at 10k rpm, and easily toss it into turns. That was the best.

It's just a different bike for different people's tastes. Just like cars... Some people like the high torque low revs of a mustang, while others prefer the low torque high revs of an s2000. I think S54 owners are closer to the later camp, but there is still decent amount of torque in our M cars.

I think there is no denying the ideal of high torque and high revs, which is basically what the liter bike gets you, but you sacrifice a bit a handling. And that tradeoff is just a personal preference, why fight about it?

Yup great points, marinb. Such a diplomat.

I'll agree it's really down to personal preference. No need to argue about it.

Have you guys done any custom tuning to your bikes? I'm running a tune that was created for a bike virtually identical to mine. Same mods and everything. The dude sent me the file and I used a tuning software to load it into my ECU. Talk about geeky. But damn was it worth it. And he wouldn't even let me paypal him money. He refused. This is easily worth a thousand dollars for the engine performance on my bike compared to stock. Just like those who have the tunes on their Z4M's. They rave about it.

My bike

Hi, I'm a new member and just got my Z4 2 weeks ago. My bike is a Scott Addict R1 with HTC Columbia team issue color scheme. It's equipped with SRAM Red components and a Garmin GPS cycle meter. The bike weights 14.3 lbs.

My Z4 is a 3.0i with premium and sports package. I have not done anything yet except add an auxiliary input on the radio. Thanks to this forum for installation instructions.

Best regards,

06Z4

^ Welcome!

@nmulax, I had an SV650 Naked. That bike was so much fun. I would love to have one again. IMHO, one of the best "bang for the buck" bikes out there.

@06Z4 Nice bike and car! That's one crazy light road bike.

I'll post a picture of my road bike once I figure out how to jam it into the back of my coupe.

Finally got mine about a month and a half ago!

2010 leftover Yamaha FZ6R purchased brand new. A little over 500 miles so far, just did my first oil change. Damn these things are fun!

A couple of friends who got into riding at the same time got a Ninja 650R and ER-6N. If you're consider the SV650, I wouldn't dismiss any of these options. Comfortable seating positions, good low-end power, and all quick enough to get you in trouble easily. The 2010 ER-6N looks badass with the matte black paint, if you're into the naked look.

Nice Scott! I just got a new Felt. About a whole 5lbs heavier though... probably 6 with my pump/computer/lights.

I am not going to say anything else as far as bike choices except before you buy a bike, go to a biking forum and see how utterly ridiculous and hindering starting on a litre bike is. Unless you just want to squid out and only drag from stoplight to stoplight I guess.

Do you go to the track often? If so, then yes, a 600 probably is more fun. But for city riding, there's nothing better than a big stump-pulling-torque of a motor that can get you from stoplight to stoplight in a thrilling fashion (all while still being responsible of course). A 600 (ZX6R, R6, GSXR600, etc etc) is utter crap for this type of riding. An SV650 on the other hand is great.

Maybe you don't have the responsibility that others have and a 600 is better for you. Nothing wrong with that. But I'm sticking to my guns and telling nmulax that he should not be scared of a bigger bike just because it has more power. He may need that power in a critical situation - it's happened to me more than once. BUT if he knows he has little to no self-control, then a motorcycle is probably not the wisest choice for him in the first place.
a part I agree, a part i don't.

you will kill yourself real fast on a bike (no matter what size 600cc or 1000cc) if you do stupid things.

but I do not agree with your statement "A 600 (ZX6R, R6, GSXR600, etc etc) is utter crap for this type of riding. An SV650 on the other hand is great." only thing 650 is better than those 600s is the upright position comfort.

I think he means because of the much lower redline and torque curve, an SV650 is a much better city bike.

An R6 has a redline of 17,500, while an SV650 redlines at 10,500. An SV650 is a bike that you you don't have to take to redline, you can change gears at 6-8k rpm.

I've had this '08 Z4 3.0si for 2 summers now, and it's great fun. I store it in the winter to give me something to look forward to when Spring returns.

The old girl. More scruffy up close but I will be putting some time and money into it this summer. This thread is awesome. So many different bike categories.

'Lil road rash I see.

Oooh yeah more on the other side too. Almost 30 years of battle before me. Just picked it up this summer. I'll be restoring it to the best of my abilities in 2023. I'm told it's a sin because it's the rare urban tiger color scheme but I think if I didn't buy it, it would've been a parts bike so I won't feel guilty about it.

That is a brilliant idea, I'll have to put that on the list. I am very excited about this one. Lots to learn.
