Oil temps

Wondering what oil temps others are getting during regular day to day driving
Mine get up to 210-220 on an 80 degree day.
Is that normal?
Can you guys who monitor that share your data??

that would be degrees F, not sure, but mine sits pretty much in the center after taking about 10 minutes to warm up.

Thanks guys
Looking more for a figure as shown on an analog guage

More likely the supercharged guys have a guage
My concern is I am running hot with the supercharger and I could use an oil cooler
The water temp guage sits right where it should be.
Are the oil and water temps comparable ie if the water temp guage is showing normal then 210-220 f is normal oil temp?

I've seen 125C after a long (30-minute) track session at the 'Ring in 32C ambient.

That's about 258F and 90F respectively.

M3 guys all see similar after track sessions, and general consensus was below 280F was fine.

Vanne and Sixspeed, good to know I am not concerned with my temps now.

I did see 230f last year during the Woodward Dream Cruise but that was in 10mph traffic cruising the strip.

Normally, my car runs around the 12-o-clock mark @ 210*F. On the track when it was still NA, I saw as high as 230-240*F. Now that it's supercharged, I'm hoping it's not too bad.

When I tracked my friend's bone stock E90 M3 one time, I also saw the same 230-240*F temps. These were all @ Laguna Seca, where it's pretty mild mind you. Ambient temps in the wintertimes are usually around 60*F, and summertimes only get up to 80*F if that. So if I were to run my car in a hotter or more humid place, I might run into overheating issues

Has anybody noticed that you all are comparing apples to oranges.
The original OP has an M54 with forced induction.

The OP needs to talk to 'pokybritches' who does have an M54 with forced induction and an ///M.

With regards to oil temp, it's actually Fuji apples to Granny Smith. They're comparable. Oil degradation is related to temps, and even on the M54, normal, cruising oil temp should hover around 210-ish and no more than 275 when stressed, even though the S54 uses 10W-60 while the M54 probably is on 5W-30 or 5W-40.

Now, the WATER TEMP that was mentioned by OP...Is it on the factory gauge, or is it on the factory diagnostic menu, or was it from a separate aftermarket gauge? Because the factory gauge is buffered. It will only show 3 states, cold, warmed up, and engine is about to go Chernobyl. If the needle is moving away from dead center toward "warm" it's already starting to overheat.

Hack,
Water temp gauge is factory and needle is rock steady at 12 o,clock once warmed up.
Aftermarket oil temp,boost and AFR.
The car is strictly summer driven and as such run Castrol Edge with Syntec 5W40

My main concern was that the temps I was running were too high and that the oil would be breaking down prematurely because of the FI but it seems well within limits, especially if the water temp is as stable as it is.

Well if your oil temp is too high, pretty much all of today's BMWs running on forced induction should grenade themselves within a few thousand miles. The N54 and N55 equipped BMWs run at 250-260º F as their standard operating temp.

As for that water temp gauge, it's useless. Like I said, it's not likely to budge from dead center until the engine is already at the verge of self destruction. It's a dummy gauge, there's 3 operating points, cold, warmed up, and about to overheat. Anything between "cold" and "about to overheat" it'll stay dead center. For an accurate monitoring of your water temp you should put the instrument cluster into diagnostic mode, or have another aftermarket gauge hooked up.

If you have a Intravee II, you can display the coolant temperature in C or F, as well as max temp. It'll even record and display the max temp for the previous 17 trips when looking through the journal history.

How do I put the cluster in diagnostic mode?
