Service Engine Soon light just came on

Fortunately, I have both a Peake code reader as well as the Bavarian Technic cable/program so I have read the code(s). Essentially, it says that the pre-cat oxygen sensor for bank 2 (I assume this is cylinders 4-6) is disconnected/unplugged. Another code on the Peake reader said that this sensor requires a "systemcheck".

No one has been under the hood anywhere near the sensors so it doesn't make sense to me that anything could actually be disconnected. Does this mean that the sensor has failed or can there be something else that triggered the error code? Any help from the technical experts on this board would be greatly appreciated.

these can fail 'open'
which would be the same as being disconnected as far as diagnostic is concerned.

That's kind of what I thought. However, at the price of these sensors I wanted to get another opinion before I started buying parts.

Ok, as I've been waiting for a few days for the new O2 sensor to arrive, the car has been driving just fine. Only the SES light has been on. Then yesterday on my way home from work I'm sitting at a stoplight and I can feel the car shaking a little and then I feel some sputtering as I take off. This lasts about two miles and then goes away. I checked the error codes and i get misfires on 3 different cylinders along with another code showing a mixture issue. I'm hoping that the problem is still just the one O2 sensor but we'll find out in the next day or so. I'm just worried that I wasn't expecting misfire codes to result from a faulty O2 sensor.

From experience with the E39, the codes that point to the O2 sensors are very non specific. After buying new sensors and having the problem and the codes come back, I found the intake camshaft position sensor and the idle control valve to be the culprits.

I have an E39 as well and agree with you about O2 codes but I think if the CPS were the problem, it would trigger a specific CPS error. The one thing that makes me think it is the O2 sensor this time is that the mis-fires are showing up in cylinders 4-6 only, which is the same cylinders to which the failing O2 sensor supports. I'm hoping the part arrives today so that I can replace it tonight.

I understand, but have you priced the O2 sensors on this car. List is about $220ea X 4. I was able to find one for about $100 though. I sure hope they send the right one. Besides, these things are supposed to go 100k and I have only 33k on the car. I'm hoping that only one of them went early.

Yeah, I know, everything on this car is $$$. I had just replaced them and the coils at 30k on the E46M3 as well, just don't seem to last very long. $100 is a GOOD price

The part came in today and I installed it on my car tonight. Before I installed it, I checked the part number against the one that came out of the car and the Bosch replacement part had the exact same number as the BMW part. The only difference is I found the Bosch part for half the price of the dealer/BMW part.

While the engine in our car is very accessable, some of the O2 sensors are not. The one I had to replace is the pre-cat bank 2 sensor and it was difficult to get to from both above and below. I finally was able to get it out from above using 3 different extensions on the O2 sensor socket. After I got the new one in and put everything together, the engine fired up and ran very smoothly. I let it run for 2 x 3 minute intervals and then took it on a 10 minute drive. Then I checked the engine codes and got NO FAULTS FOUND It sure is nice having the Bavarian Technic tool to help with diagnosing problems on our cars.

I have to replace one as well. Where did you get them for cheap?

I got it here

http://www.fcpeuro.com/

However, after I ordered the part I went back a few days later to check on the order status and make sure I had ordered the correct part number. I noticed that the part that I had ordered had gone up from $106.99 to $149. Not sure why and my part was not affected by this price change. That would still have been about the best price I saw as most places had the sensor I needed at $160-$200. This was an identical part number to the one that I took off the car so I'm very happy with the way things turned out.
