My 2003 Z4 have weird noise and does not start

I just drove the car 2 days ago. Everything was working fine. Today, when the key was turned to ON, there were whirring noises, which I thought unusual since it was louder than usual. And when the key was turned to START, lights on the panel blinking, several clicking sound and nothing. I know then the battery is low, I will hear constant clicking noise as long as the key kept at the START position. But in this case, some lights remain on. Car has only 48K miles and garage kept. Is the battery the problem? Can I charge the battery without removing it from the car? Thank you for your advice.

I read the post Z4M dies by ncnmra and thought that the problem of my Z4 could be the BST (battery safety terminal). I will look into it. But first I was not accurate when described the problem in the original post. The car did make constant clicking sound when the key turned to START and kept at the START position. My little experience tells me that the battery is weak and I should recharge it and replace it if it's old. So my question is can I charge the battery with it sitting in the trunk as is? With my Hyundai, I'd charge charge it as it sits in the car, but with the BMW, I am afraid to screw it up. Thank you.

Not sure about the 2003 2.5, but the ///M has a positive terminal under the hood in the center near the windshield. It should have a black plastic cover with "+" stamped on it.

The ground terminal is under the hood near the left side wheel well.

Yes. You'll be fine hooking your charger to those posts.

I did a quick charge to the battery via direct connection to the battery post, just long enough to start the car. My Interstate MTP-91 battery is dated Jan 2010, so a new replacement is needed immediately. Costco Tire center has the best price at $125 (new replacement series is Interstate H6-48). Costco will reimburse $15 when the old battery is returned to them. Thank you very much for your help.
