Z4 3.0si Brake Options

Just wondering what the 3.0si guys are running. I was looking at the powerslot rotors at tire rack and the akebono pads at tire rack. Can you tell me

1. What you are running?
2. Where you bought them?
3. What did you pay?

I need to get a hold of these brakes by Friday btw.

While I had planned on upgrading mine when the time came....these factory parts are still holding up well even after 51k on the ode.

I am just about due for a change. I have about 110k on the car... and I am pretty sure the rear rotors and pads are original.

I used whatever cheap blanks they had on Tire Rack, usually ATE fronts and Brembo rears (Brembos are always on sale for some reason), paired up with PFC Z-rated pads. I have Akebono on my other car and they work pretty well but I like PFC and Stoptech street. Just avoid Hawk like the plague...

1. Akebono pads, centric rotors
2. RockAuto
3. $370 for pads, rotors and üro sensors (mine were tripped by wear)

I wasn't happy with the feel of the setup at first but now they feel normal. Not as much initial bite as oem.

I bought stainless steel brake lines that I will be installing shortly along with ATE Superblue brake fluid. Should help a little bit I hope.

here's the post I had made:

How'd that StopTech Brake Upgrade kit work out for you? I was also eyeing them. I'm going to get my car ready for some track days this year and this kit looked promising.

I've used Akebono AND Hawk performance ceramic for street use and found them both good.

Don't bother spending $$$ on fancy drilled/slotted rotors [for the track]. Get cheapo blanks paired with quality pads & high temp fluids. No street pad will hold up to track abuse, maybe your first weekend two but only a matter of time before you get fade. Get track pads for track, street pads for street. Hawks and PFC tend to be the popular ones here. I ran stock calipers + PFC's for 2 years before upgrading to a bbk.

And as you log more days, look into brake cooling. I did a write-up for the Aero bumper here, and it's helped tremendously.

I'll +1 the plain Centric rotors-- front and rear less than $300 shipped from RockAuto. Been using the Stoptech Street Performance pads (~$90 shipped from same source) for DD duty and Hawk DTC-60s for the track.

Thanks for the advice. I've got some free time coming up in February when I'll finally have time to do the brakes.

Do you guys swap the street pads back in after track day? Do the track pads have too much bite to use all the time?

Is there are DIY on changing the brake fluid?

Yes, most people swap their street pads back in.

It's not too much bite, it's too little. The compounds in the track pads are designed to have their best bite at higher temperatures than you'd see if street driving. They don't bite as well when cold.

Not a bite issue but they won't get up to optimal temps for normal street driving, so you'll actually have less stopping power over stock pads.

Search around for the DIY but if you plan on doing it solo get a bleeder. Else you'll need a 2nd person to do it the traditional way by pumping the pedal.

Problem(s) with using track compound for street use, besides the few here that are already mentioned, is that when not up to operating temp, track pads are incredibly abrasive to rotors because of their high metallic compound. Not only do you not get 1/2 of their actual braking potential using them for street, you also dramatically shorten the life of your rotors.

Not to mention you will look and sound like a d-bag when you come to a stop every time, and make your ear bleed.

I've gotten so lazy I stop swapping pads out lol. I just try to time my full stop braking with nearby school buses or trucks haha.

Lol... Thanks for the advice. I'll make sure not to swap in the track pads until an event. I watched some videos on YouTube on changing brakes. It shouldn't be too bad. I might practice anyway swapping out the pads this February with some low dust pads. I've had this car for 15000 miles already. It's probably almost time to change pads.

I know this kind of an old thread but I'm new here and can't start a new one. Can anyone recommend a good brake upgrade kit for an 08 E85 that still uses the factory parking brake? Car is not a daily driver and will not be used on the track.
Thanks!

Welcome,
Do a search for brake upgrades.
Typically a fluid change and a better pad will improve the braking.
If you are looking for BBK for the bling factor I have come to the conclusion it is a waste, but there are a few kits out there for the non M's. None of them offer a parking brake AFAIK.

Thanks. Yes, is more for the looks as I have the BBS type 108 wheels and since that is such an open design I think it would look better with drilled/slotted rotors. However, since it's manual tranny I'm not willing to forgo the parking brake.

When the time comes to replace the rotors and pads I would suggest throwing on some drilled rotors, painting the calipers and calling it a day.
