Clunking noise from inactive car
I noticed a clunking noise coming from my car when I was taking out my bike earlier. It is two clunks about half a second apart and it happens every 10-15 seconds.
I have not driven my car since yesterday and I still hear the noise from my car. No lights are on and the keys are not in the car. I recorded the noise, I will try and upload it so it may be easier to diagnose. Anybody have a clue to what it could be off the top of their head? It is coming from the underside, seems to be near the middle near the front axle.

It first happens at second 4, then second 17, then once again at the end. I am holding the phone under the car, drivers side in the middle.
The clicking noise is my motorcycle cooling down, the car is a distinctive clunk.

Are your locks/seats cycling up/down for no reason?
you might try a code reader to see if there's any minor electrical faults too. Last edited by blender; 06-01-2010 at 09:14 PM.. |

rcleme hit the nail on the head and I feel like an idiot now for even posting
I took my car to lift this morning since it is going to rain and noticed the noise is much louder inside the cabin. Just so happens something fell between my door and the passenger seat and the cycling clunk was the auto seats hitting the maximum adjustment and clicking off before trying to adjust again. The sun guard was sitting on one of the controls and was apparently heavy enough to engage it and move the seat to the floor.

Mine was making an odd noise after a fun drive the other night and it was the gas tank. I loosened the cas cap and it hissed and no more noise. My 4 wheeler does this also, glad you found your problem.

There is supposed to be a breather valve to equalize gas tank pressure as the fuel level drops - if yours is hissing the breather may be clogged. This can result in low fuel pressure and a bog/stall. Worth checking out!
