What do y'all make of this M Coupe?

I saw this car for sale on autotrader and noticed the very reasonable price and ran the carfax listed for free and it came up clean.

http://joemachensbmw.com/preowned-in...96LL93346.aspx

Out of habit I went to the dealer website for more info and saw the autocheck report link and hit it just for posterity.

Why would a franchised bmw dealer sell a salvage titled/frame damaged car? It seems more confounding that the car was a "manufacturer vehicle". Could this mean it was a bmwusa fleet car or crash test car?

sometimes they get damaged from shipping and other things, shoot i saw picks of an aston martin that had fallen off the delivery truck and that was not pretty....so sad!

but with 23000 miles it could have been a test mual or press car which sometimes they wreck.

thoug your right not sure why a bmw dealer would sell it. I know they are not allowed to cpo it if it has frame damage, so its just probably just sitting on a lot and if it doesnt sell in 3 months they take it back to the auction.

I could have bought a black 2007 Z4 M Coupe with 18K miles for 30K, but instead opted to buy a certified 2007 Z4 M Coupe with 23,300 miles for 34.9K.

The one selling for 30K had no service records available and was sold via an independent dealer. I paid 5K more for a certified M Coupe with a clean title and service history as opposed to question marks.

I would never buy a car of this caliber with frame damage because you have to think of it this way. While in your mind you might think you are getting a great deal since you're buying this car 5-8K less than market value, you don't really know what kind of damage the car sustained and if its safe to drive or will the damage come back to bite you at a later time.

Don't forget. The dealer is lowering the cost greatly to intice someone to buy it so the car is no longer their "problem".

Pass on it. I am sure you can find one with comparable miles, same year for around $30K or so.

This was a BMW high performance driving school vehicle new. It was wrecked and put back together in the factory. I know the previous owner(BMW Employee here in Columbia). The extent of the original damage is not known. I do know that it was put back on the line and rebuilt robotically. Stopped and looked at it Saturday night. Had "FRAME" written on the windshield with an oil pen. I was told it would get about 21,500 at auction. Id stay away IMHO.

I would stay away from this one.

Even if everything checks out on a laser rack and is perfect, your typical M coupe buyer will not want this car. It's a performance car and most buyers are going to want to drive it at the limit without worry.

If you have no intention of selling and are willing to take the gamble on future issues, you could give it a try. The price is way too high in my opinion for a salvaged M.

I should have been more clear from the beginning - my apologies. What I was really driving at was whether the discrepancy was an issue with the reporting services or some other reason.

That being said, it sounds like from the responses here the history is traceable and very clearly a wrecked/salvaged vehicle. It was more a question (poorly asked) about the merits of the reports and how to interpret them.

Thanks everyone for your input - internet boards are pretty amazing in their breadth of knowledge.

*as an added aside what is the experience with dealer retail vs sale price on these used - I ask because I read an article the other day on buying used cars and they noted dealer markup results in a 20% gross profit - do y'all think theres any truth in general and with the M's?

LOL. NO

It is just a random picture I took at a WF Bank parking lot, which there happens to be a Home Depot. They have all these big Home Depot shopping carts scattered all over the lot as you probably know if you ever been to a Home Depot.

Again. for even asking.

Still for sale. Took a closer look at it today. Not bad for the price mileage. If you plan on keeping her Id say someone should go for it. Some swirls in paint. Some chips but its a nice ride. Hell its a z4m coupe.

Informed the dealer about the damage and they are taking down the add and will wholesale.
Autohaus of St Louis is very reputable.
