can i put 07 z4 engine into 04 z4?
hello everyone,
I have 2007 z4 3.0 i (US) engine and auto transmission, has 30k miles. I found a 2004 Z4 3.0 (US) with no engine and (auto) transmission. I was wondering, If I get this car , is it really hard to put the engine in, or is it impossible? what are the differences between them? thank you |

Well the cars appear to be the same except for the production year. Why would you want to move the engine from a newer model to an older model that is exactly the same and the first one? Don't get me wrong, I am all for engine swaps and the likes, but this just seems... weird!!
And to answer your question, it will probably fit, you have to move the ECU as well because there might be differences in the programming. The gearbox should be the same.

Yeah... what's the point of switching to the older body?

I believe what the OP is saying is.
- He has an engine and a transmission from an '07 car (I'm assuming the car is wrecked/parted out). - He found an '04 car without an engine or transmission. Adding the 2 together will get the OP a working car.

didn't they change the ECU Pinout after the facelift?
If so, you'd have to transfer the whole wiring harness, etc. If not, I'm delusional.

There are probably more changes between an 04 3.0i and an 07 3.0si then there are to a 07 3.0si and a 07 Z4 M
This is something I would only attempt if I was building some kind of race car, the effort involved doesn't seem worth it.

If you have all of the other electronics and harnesses from the 07 car it could work pretty easy.

Well in any case it is easier than trying to modify wiring and to program the ECU to work with other systems and another engine.
