Cayman GT4
I am not usually one to window shop for future cars as I am a die-hard BMW fan, and as of late they haven't really offered anything comparable to our beloved Z4Ms.
I have recently however taken a liking to the Porsche Cayman GT4. It looks like it is only available as a manual as well which is very intriguing and NA which, in an ever growing world of turbo-charging and hybrid low emissions everything, it is a bit of a nice break these days. The back end of the regular Cayman has always been atrocious looking to me, but this one is improved, although imo still not as good looking of a back end as our Z4Ms. Has anyone looked into or considered this as future replacement ? If so, any pros vs cons to consider in your eyes ? I apologize ahead of time if someone has covered this specific question before.

The biggest problem that I've heard about is finding one, the used ones are more expensive than the new ones because the demand is high. I haven't looked into it on my own, but that's what I've heard from other car enthusiasts.

Agreed. You'll be lucky to find a used one at MSRP

Looking at +$25k over MSRP at the moment to get your hands on one.
If you already have a Z4MC, you're have the next best thing to a GT4. At a fraction of a price as well. /DRIVE had a show that discussed the GT4; and in several occasions during the show they noted the Z4M being a very good drive. At the $100k price point (GT4 MSRP + premium) and if I actually had money to burn, I'd wait for 997.X GT3's come down a little more in price and try to snap up one of those. |

The supply is so limited that what was stated above is true.
However, with the stunning success of the Cayman GT4, Porsche has started development of a Boxster GT4. One may have a chance at one of those since it will have elevated performance above a 981 Boxster GTS, but the demographic for it cannot or will not be able to track that car. So trying to get one of those may be an option for you unless you want hardtop. Good luck to you. |

I was looking at one at the dealer the other day -- really beautiful car in person. Has much more presence than the regular Cayman. The interior alcantara & stitching details are really nice too. But they are all sold, so I would just build my own version with a 3.6 swap or a turbo

And the price for a nice 996 GT3 RS are going totally bonkers as well, at least here in Sweden/Europe. They are more expensive than a 997 GT3 last I checked. It's due to the 996 being the last with mechanical steering I think.
As I've said on several occations before on other car forums, bubble warning... Once the interest rates start to climb we'll see a colapse in enthusiast car prices. |

Having made the move from a Z4C to a 981S, I might have a little insight on your thoughts.
I fell in love with the driving experience of the 981 when I test drove a pdk 981 boxster S. I had never smiled so much driving a car before and I am a manual guy!I was hooked and ordered a 981 cayman S. While I have never developed a real hook into the look of a cayman like I had for a Z4C, the driving enjoyment the car has brought me is leagues above. I can only imagine the GT4 will offer an even more engaging experience. These cars are really hard to beat in that area. even if you can't get a GT4, get a gts or even a lowly S and I think you'll be pretty happy. agreed the rear is worst angle for the car, which made me test drive a 991 (which has a great arse), but the 991 was for me, due to its bigger size and further away placement of the engine, not as engaging and fun. Maybe add the techart rear wing to another cayman if you can't get a GT4. Best with the decision. |

Great car at MSRP, not as excited about it at $25k above MSRP. I hope they will increase production in the coming years which will help lower the selling price and help them depreciate more like standard Porsche's. Reality is I would only buy a Porsche used at a significant reduction from MSRP.

They mentioned the "1st" gen Z4MC. Did BMW made more than one generation of Z4M? |

As far as BMW not building cars like the Z4 M, you can pretty much count on that. Not that they couldn't be incredible, but BMW is very much about efficiency and building itself a reputation for user friendly cars with very low end torque.
Hence why every engine is turbo charged now. But clearly Porsche has proven there is a strong desire for this kind of car. To all you Z4 M owners out there I say, enjoy watching the resale value of your car skyrocket within the next 10 years. |

I test drove the Cayman GTS and the 911 GTS and loved both. The new Cayman is so much newer, more refined, and more capable than the Z4Mc that they aren't even comparable on paper. That said, I don't think the Porsche is any more fun or engaging than the Z4Mc. The electric steering in the Porsche is great but not as fast or communicative as the Z4Mc, the S54 feels much more responsive than the flat 6, and the older Z4M just feels more mechanical and communicative.
My Z4Mc has coilovers, headers, etc, and I put a deposit down for a GT4 because I'm getting old and want a more comfortable car |

Like everyone is saying, the GT4 would be a great Z4M coupe replacement, IF you could actually buy one. And at MSRP (starts at $84,600) it's a bit of a bargain for what you get. And I've no doubt it will appreciate in value.
This is probably the only modern car that has the same analog spirit of the Z4M coupe. That said, I wouldn't give up the coupe for a GT4. I'd rather add the GT4 because the coupe does not (yet) have a market price that makes it worth selling. It sure means a lot more to me than $35K...

Anyone here have driven the first generation Cayman S (295 bhp)? How is it compared to a Z4MC and a 997 911? Not that I'll ever sell my Coupe, but just out of curiosity.
