Either way what it comes down to is really the maintenance. Do you do a lot of your own work or will you be trusting your wallet to another source? The maintenance on those guys is significantly more than what we face with the Z4Ms (just in nature due to the extra cylinders). The engine of that car though, whew, yeah sign me up. Either way, where do your passions sit and how handsy or handy are you? Those would be my two big questions. |

At the very least let it be a 2001-2003 facelift model. Not familiar with the details but the 2000 models had engine issues that got resolved in 2001-2003 facelift. Don't quote me but I THINK it has to do with bad design of piston rings. Vanos is a given on all BMW's but the facelift one's have less reports of vanos issues. Plus you're getting angel eyes, led taillights, updated steering wheel, updated setup of navigation, the car just looks entirely different inside and out. Get the facelift one, trust.
My friend owns one and man it's a bundle of joy to say the least. Would I ever own one? HELL YES, but not at the expense of replacing my Z4M. I would own one along side of the Z4M. We've seen it many times, people buy the Zed, people sell the Zed, only to realize they're life is a total wreck without the Zed. Don't be that guy. |

OP weren't you convinced that your M coupe was worth close to 50K? Do you really think a 2000 M5 is worth 50k as well?
http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1094426 Edit: guys that have been around the forum a few years, doesn't OP remind you of Villa? Miss that dude.

Uh no, don't do it. Maybe list your Z for a reasonable price(~$30-35k range), which would still be worth over twice what a pre-lci E39 M5 is

Such different cars. I love both. I prefer daily driving the M5, but the coupe is a hoot in much different ways.
E39 M5: Often thought of as the best M5 produced, combining significant driver involvement, a river of low-end torque, and classic BMW design. Z4M coupe: Much more visceral, combining striking looks with what has to be one of the most iconic M engines ever. That it is rare and the last of its kind (manual only, normally aspirated, hydraulic steering) is just icing on the cake. Solution (the one I came up with anyway): get both! They really do compliment each other. The M5 has been my DD for the past 11 years and I still love it. Quote:
Of course, if you want to spend some serious cash for a nice used M car, just head over to Enthusiast Auto (http://enthusiastauto.com/). Right now, among others, they have a 2003 E39 M5 for $50K, a 2007 Z4M coupe for $42K and...wait for it...two S54 (Z3) M coupes for > $70K!

I am now convinced that OP is just trolling with every thread that he opens.

I almost bought my car there, across town instead of Mass., few thousand more from them but not outrageous, just didn't have the interior I wanted.

E39 M5's are a lot of car for the money, probably a future classic as it's the last M5 with a stick shift and NA. Great cars and won't cost that much if you are handy with a wrench.

Love the E39, but the last 6MT/NA title goes to the E60. Earlier this year I saw for sale an '09 or '10 M5 white on red with 6MT and I just about died with want. I think it had around 35k miles going for around $40k. Should've picked it up

No way, I'd rather put cash on top and get an e90 m3 else keep the Z (or trade straight up for a e90 335i)

I understand the Z4M prices commanding mid $30s for a good example, but a Z3M?!?! I've owned three of them over the years, and they aren't 1/3 the car the Z4M is. I'm not saying the Z3M is a bad car, it isn't, but I wouldn't pay anymore than $16k for a top of the line S54 example. This is especially true when you can get a nice Z4M which is way more car in the low $20s.
I honestly can't think of one single thing I'd bring over from the Z3M to the Z4M besides the two toned interior. I do love that interior. Everything else is vastly superior on the Z4M. Bizarre pricing. I can only hope and pray the Z4M retains its value the same way as the Z3M. |
