Thanks for the words folks. I will put up a new thread shortly laying out the steps I used to make this fit correctly. I am sure there are some people out there that have considered this but need more information.

Hey guys - quick question on wheels/tires before I bite the bullet.

our original wheels are:
F 18 x 8 ET42
R 18 x 9 ET30

I'm looking at this set of wheels/tires:
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=751995

18x8 ET37 M6 Reps with blizzaks.

Now, the offset calc said i'm off by a few mm in front - I'm ok with that.

HOWEVER - the offset calc says my rears are going to protrude 20mm more.

What are your thoughts - should I consider the extra width a deal breaker? Is it a safety issue, or just a cosmetic issue? I've never bought wheels before and I'm going to be really upset with myself if I screw this up - so thanks for your help!

^ 18x8 all around? You'll be fine. The rears will actually "sink" into the well, not protrude. In fact, you may need a spacer in rear, but doubtful. You may want to get a 12mm or 15mm spacer anyway for cosmetic purpose.

Some M6 reps need 74.1 to 72.56 hub rings, so make sure you get those from fleaBay if needed.

Well, they're coming off an E89 - so I assume they'll fit without the hub rings?

Any recommendations on where I can get decent spacers on the cheap?

^ The wheels will work without rings, but you may experience vibration without them. The owner may not realize/care about the vibration. Just ask him if he knows anything about it or what the bore of the wheels are. My 19" M6 reps had a correct bore for front, but I needed rings for rear.

I get spacers from PYSpeed. Not the cheapest, but quality.

Anyone know, would the below fit??
-18"x8"
-5x120 bolt pattern
-Offset: +20
- 225/40R18 Front rubber
- 245/40R18 Rear rubber (would 255/40/18 fit?)

Really cheap rims for winter that I think would clear a BBK. Would come out cheaper than spacers. Thanks

The rear will fit without a problem with either 245/40-18 or 255/40-18. The front may be a problem, most likely rubbing on the inner liner by the headlight at full lock and possibly on the fender at full suspension compression.

For winter tyres and wheels I run 225/45-18 all around on +40 front wheels offset and +20 rear wheels offset.

I'm looking at a set of rims from an E46 to use for winter tires.

http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/pts/3389247068.html

18x8, ET47. That should fit no problem, right?

The price is making me think these might be either replicas or stolen, anyone want to chime in with an opinion?

And if you live in PA/NJ, please don't buy these wheels in response to me posting them here

^ Considering how beat up they are, $200 is fair. I thought M3 wheels were staggered? And the offset looks too positive to be genuine ///M. Anyway, you'll need big spacers on rear (at least 15mm), and at least 5mm in front.

Big spacers to fit without rubbing, or big spacers to sit flush?

I thought a big offset would push the wheels out, reducing the need for spacers?

Thanks

You have it backwards. OEM offset for Z4 M is:
Front: ET42
Rear: ET30

The higher the number, the more inset the wheel is going to be. So you'll need spacers to get a "stock" look. If you want flush, these aren't the wheels for you.

Ok, I was thinking of it backwards.

I'm mostly concerned with the wheels fitting without rubbing. These are going to be my winter wheels, which I'll run for 4 1/2 months max. If they sit farther in than my oem wheels, I can live with that.

Just confirming

Before I buy them, I want to triple check w/ you all to ensure I'm on a non-rub path!

Stock suspension, might do CO's soon but won't be slammed. I want the following wheels/tires:

FRONT: 19x9 ET35 w/ 245/35/19
REAR: 19-10 ET25 w/ 275/30/19

Will it rub?

Thanks to the collective!

^ I was waiting for an "expert" to chime in. Looks good to me. Tires will look "slightly" stretched, but will help to prevent rubbing.

Will depend on the tire Brand/Type you choose and ride height.

^This. Tires with a rounded sidewall, like the PSS, are your best bet in the 275/35. Square shouldered tires are another story. Lower the car, and that's a whole other set of variables to account for.

Another option is to go with a 9.5" wheel rear. That's what I did, went with 9.5 ET22. I can run either 265/35 rubber or 275/35 rubber in the measured (recommended) rim width. We have wheels on the two Ms running both sizes on this size rear wheel (PSS 275/35, and NT05 265/35). Both look good and perform well.

The 9.5 set-up with the ET22 looks aggressive IMO, and it gives some leeway on 275/35 tire choices, and if you plan to lower in the future, there's flexibility. The general rule is that for every 1/2" change in rim width, the tire's section width go up by about ~2/10". So, a 275/35, which has a 10.9" section width on a the 9.5" (measured) rim will have an 11.1" section width on a 10" rim. That's not good or bad, it's just that it actually increases the width of the tire just a bit, and that may be enough to rub. With a rounded sidewall, it works, but with a square sidewall, it's probably going to rub.

I went with 9" in front, because the front tires get worked laterally a lot more, especially in track and autoX, so I wanted a rim size at least a half inch wider than the measured rim width to help keep the sidewall square and well managed. Up front I have flexibility to run 235/40 or 245/40 up front with that half inch over the measured rim width I was looking for.

Take a look here, post 1, silver car, that is my exact setup in the rear (except black wheels). The black roadster is running 275/35, lowered on coils, and it works but with a lot of negative camber to avoid rubbing. The thread shows a lot of possibilities, including those with stock suspension who are running 10" with 275/35 PSS w/o issue.

It really boils down to your goals, set-up, and preferred tire.

THANKS for the info! I'll be running a separate track set up...so this is my looksy set up. For the track, I think I'm going w/ an Apex set up but for now, am just using up the OEM's until they're cooked.

I really appreciate the info this forum provides w/out flaming "do a search" rants. I come from, and am still into the Audi scene but want to get more educated on all things BMW since these cars actually require a skilled driver. My second track day was incident free, but man...there is no AWD or under steer to save your ass I felt worked!

Still working on heel-toeing.

Happy to help. Yes, you really have to drive this car! It's not going to bail you out. But it's very rewarding too, and quite a capable machine.
