I have had this happen on my S54 MZ3, MZ4 and several S54 equipped M3's w/the stock tune. I have not had any RPM fluctuations or issues once I had an ECU remap (such as AA, Shark, Evolve, etc...) so I'm wondering if the factory tune has something to do with it.

i have owned 3 z4m so far and all of them does it. it normally happen after a long drive and then i come to a complete stop (red light or parking with engine running). the idle struggles for about 1 second and comes back to normal. it drops to about 3-400rpm and come back up.
i took my first z4mc to the dealership since the car was only a few months old at the time. they kept the car for several days and told me it is normal. i didn't believe them at first but on my second and third z4m, all of them have done it to me so its not a surprise to me anymore. it never die out on me or created a check light. |

Just a quick bump, I just had my valves adjusted and checked all vanos stuff. The exhaust hub was in perfect condition, and the intake hub didn't have loose bolts (wiggle test). I replaced the vanos filter, but it didn't look at all dirty when I pulled it. In fact, the new filter looked dirtier than the old one after running for 10 minutes.

Didn't read the whole thread but this has happened to me a handful of times between 0 and 20K miles. It never fully died. I'm at 30K+ now and it is happening much less frequently. Then again, I moved to California last year so maybe fuel quality has something to do with it. I always used 92 in WA but CA only has 91. In WA, I used a dose of Techron Concentrate every few months. Not needed in CA seemingly.
My guess is it's an ECU bug.

To follow up I actually had it die completely once now. I was running low on fuel and right after I filled up it died on me at a light. I have about 4k miles until inspection 2. I do find it does it more on a low tank so I try to keep it above half now.
