Metal roof for BMW’s new Z4 E89 - Source Auto Express
Our spies have lifted the lid on the next-generation BMW Z4 – and the big news is that it’s getting a folding metal roof for the first time!
Look closely at these prototypes, and you’ll see that instead of a fabric affair, the new Z4 is following in the footsteps of its 3-Series Convertible big brother, plus its Mercedes SLK rival, with a retractable steel top. As our artist’s impression shows, the car will also get a more muscular look. And the convertible has another trick up its sleeve. BMW isn’t content with raining on the SLK’s parade, as it will seek to outgun the Porsche Boxster with a new range of powerful engines for the car. These are likely to include the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six-cylinder unit. There’s even the possibility that the Z4 will be available with diesel power for the first time, too. And a flagship M model could get the new 4.0-litre V8 from the M3 – although a broad line-up of four-cylinder and normally aspirated six-cylinder petrol powerplants will continue to be offered. All cars will benefit from BMW’s Efficient Dynamics programme, which helps to cut CO2 emissions and boost fuel economy with features such as an engine stop/start facility. Under the skin, the platform is shared with the latest-generation 3-Series, so the rear-wheel-drive Z4 will continue to provide driver-pleasing handling. Although these prototypes appear to be much bigger than the current model, this is down to the bulky disguise. Peel back all that plastic camouflage, and the newcomer measures only around an inch or so longer and wider than the existing Z4. Our sources have also discovered that production is likely to shift from South Carolina in the US to BMW’s plant at Regensburg, Germany. |

If it looked just like that I'd be pretty frikn happy, barring the generic taillights. Good rendering.

Yeah I thought the same when I seen that chop. It was around a few weeks ago. The taillights are a little boring/predictable and obviously those wheels wont feature on the car, but yeah - the rest is good!

I wonder where the radio antenna is actually attached on that picture. It looks either in mid-air or on the right side panel or door.

The design of the Z4 was has really grown on me, but I'm immediately impressed by the vehicle in that image. The lines appear more fluid and the design is appropriate for a roadster in it's class.

+1, wasn't sure about it at first but now I'm starting to like it. The ps shows a good evolution of the styling of the current one! Hope it turns out looking great!

First off, that car IS a Z4 - it's one of the original press photos from 2003. Someone photoshopped it to remove the Z-line on the fenders and add Z8 gills with 6-series taillights. This car bears no resemblance to the test mule spyshots, which clearly show the folding hardtop, while the photoshop has a black canvas top clearly visible behind the Z4 roll-bars.
Patrice, I'm especially disappointed in you- this picture was debunked on z4-forum a week ago, with Wondermike posting the original Z4 picture. |

I hope it look this nice. I doubt they will keep the vent on the front fender from the Z8 but I really wish they would. It really make the car look great. This is clearly a photoshop but I am keeping my finders crossed for the production one to look like that. With the TT motor in it the car is going to be such a great ride.

It's pretty obvious that it is a ps of what the person who made it thinks that the new z4 will look like...
