Mystery boot void: next to toolkit/battery in coupe?

If you remove the hard board cover in an E86 coupe's boot (maybe roadster too?) ... to expose the battery, ... there is:
a) a large compartment for the battery - nice and snug ...
b) a tiny compartment for the tool kit ... nice and snug and
c) an empty rectangular void in front of the battery and to the left of the tool kit .... which looks like it has been specially designed for something? Anyone have any idea what this was designed for? The BMW contraband cavity?

I now keep my Z4 Owner's Booklet in there (have to put some padding around it, because the edges of that box are rough and will make marks on it) .... This frees up the nets in the boot for other storage goodies.

Maybeeee?? Z4Ms don't have run flats, so maybe the cavity was added for the Ms??

That empty void could you be quite useful actually: one could add a mobile ethernet hub in there, powered from the battery and connected to the external aerial (so you don't get any mobile phone radiation within the car) ... and then have fast wired ethernet access in the car for a future iPad3 that supports USB or Thunderbolt.

[ I really don't like mobile radiation in cars: it can be about 10 times stronger in a moving vehicle than if stationary outside.]

I have my owners manual there as well. Since you said void I am assuming you do not have an M and therefore would not "need" the air compressor.

Because of the dual exhaust, the Z4 M models don't have the battery in the floor.

Edit: On the roadsters, the amp for the radio is down there next to the battery. Maybe the coupe and roadster use the same floor compartment but maybe because the coupe was designed alongside the M cars the amp was relocated in the coupe?

Well, for what it's worth I have a US spec E86 M coupe and my battery hump is on the passenger (right) side of the trunk, you remove that hard cover and underneath is a styrofoam tray that is covering the battery, in that styrofoam tray there are three compartments, far left is a thin rectangle for the tool kit, then center is an almost square compartment for the air compresser, and then far right towards the front of the car there is a cylinder shaped compartment for the M Mobility canister. Once you remove that foam tray, the battery is located snugly beneath it.

Just to follow-up:

a) I was referring to non-M coupes.

b) The boot void I was referring to is this one (see pic: below the battery, and to the left of the toolkit)

Am I correct in saying that this was originally designed for the hi-fi amplifier? My amp is certainly not there (the Carver amp: not sure where it is).

Anyone know if, when and why the amps were moved out of this special cavity?

Yep that void is where the amp goes in non-M roadsters, I don't know where they put it in the Z4M roadster or the coupes.
