Other Buy Considerations
My last thread (coupe or roadster?) worked, thanks to all, at any rate, that debate started me thinks about the newer gen, maybe the best of both worlds, the '10 are way out of my "toy" range, but I thought I'd post the question anyway
Anyone compared the last gen to the new one? I know the price difference is huge, just wondering if last gen owners are lusting for "new" or I'd never trade up? |

I've not had the privelage to drive one of the newer gen Z4's but if I had to guess, I would say the new ones are geared towards the luxury side whereas the previous gen like we drive are more raw and are made to deliver the true driving experiences. I can't express this enough; Everytime I get in mine, I feel like it wraps itself around me and I become one with the car. It's a driving machine and it never disappoints. I f'n love it.

Drive them both and decide for yourself, I would personally prefer a high revving N/A engine to a twin turbo one.

I have driven both. New one has quiet a bit more of luxury feel. I drove the sdrive 3.0. It felt and drove very nice. The hard top is an easy draw in.
A good friend of mine recently traded his 3.0si for the turbo version. His first impressions were great of the new car, but now that he has had it for a while he definitely misses the E85's "feel". He said it is hard to describe. Yet when I asked if he would go back to the E85, it is not an enthusiastic YES. My guess is he would give up the E89 when the M version comes out. |

Since you're asking for opinions, I'll give you that, my opinion.
I wouldn't go anywhere near the next Gen! The reliability of the current crop of BMWs really stinks and the HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump) used in the turbo engine has a lot to do with that (BMW and Merc consistently come in very low in quality in current surveys--exception being the E9x M3 which has old-fashioned port-injection like the S54 and N52 in the E8x series Zs). Some may say that BMW has addressed the HPFP issue--I don't believe it for a minute. From what I see they are still failing. I seem to recall you are in Reno--I wouldn't want to be in some remote part of that state or in the Sierras when the HPFP takes a digger. It's not something Cletus at the local service station can fix. And these things fail often--some guys are on pump #5 in 25K miles. The next Gen is heavier and much more of a cruiser than true sports car IMO. The suspension is much softer, it's more comfort oriented, and like most current generation BMW's has lost some of the "edge" that gave the cars a sporting character--I guess you could say it's more Merc than the prior gen. More luxury than sports oriented. IIRC from your first thread you were looking for a two seater sports car which implies a level of performance and handling and fun. If so, the prior Gen fits those requirements better (not to mention it isn't as likely to fail and leave you stranded--which is not fun in my book). Like others said, drive them both and make up your mind. |

Indeed, and a keeper! I like my Cayman IMO but you can't beat that S54's sound and performance and much higher redline. I always run out of freaking revs in the P-car--I really hate hitting the limiter. Guess which car I'm going to drive today???

Glad I Asked
I'm glad I posted the question, not that I was really considering the newer gen, I'd already started lusting for a Z4M roadster, looking at a good local low mileage, one owner car Sunday

Not in a heartbeat...love my 08Z4si...and its more than enough to get me into trouble. I think the new gen had to come simply because of how corporate works...but as my name suggests...this one is a keeper.

One thing that no one has mentioned yet is trunk space. When I traded my 00 Z3 for my 03 Z4, I got a trunk that let me easily carry two carry-on type suitcases and two backpacks or briefcases in the trunk. So if two of us are flying somewhere, we're covered or we've got plenty of room for a road trip.
The new Z4 has a similarly sized trunk as long as the top is up. But with the top down, you've got room for one carry-on bag and it better not be too thick. |

i posted a detailed comparo between the z4m and sdrive35is i test drove last year - http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthre...z4m+sdrive35is.
have recently revisited the e89's in more detail (an italian friend of mine has an sdrive30i) and i've noticed the nappa leathers used on the m's are far softer and smoother than those in the e89s, and probably most other non-m bmws for tt matter. certain bits of the interior layout are also a bit funky (cupholders where ur arms rest et al). the twin turbos are fun out and about in-town, but just don't give me the same rush or addiction i have with driving my m coupe. it's difficult to describe.... |

IMO,
The new z4s look more like a girls car. I just cant picture myself in it. It is definently more luxury then sporty. I'ts like seeing a guy in a SLK and his chiuhuahua. I thought they discontinued the M with the Z4 in the new gens and are only doing M body kits? |

+1 but I think Finnegan said it best. Most may not care, but the reverse cut present on the E85/86 is part of what makes a Z4 a Z4 IMO. They took that out of the E89. The latter is a nice looking car, but it just doesn't feel the same. Kind of a nit-pick, I suppose.
