I learned on a '62 bug that the previous owner had dropped a '59 36 hp motor into.
That was '36 rated new. Was probably less than 30 hp when I had it. Once I could routinely do 1st gear starts without stalling that crate, I could drive anything.

My first stick driving was from a dealer @ honda.
I just wanted to get a feel what it is like driving manual. I asked dealer if he could take me out (I told him I am looking for 5spd civic), he said yes and he brought me to the empty lot and taught me for 20min. I suggest you do the same for your daughter Obviously she won't learn a lot but at least she won't eat the clutch on the z4m |

What percentage of ppl in America drive stick? Do you guys take a generic test that allows you to drive stick and auto? Or do most people just take an automatic test? I'm suprised a car like the z4 which was built in the USA has a stick transmission.

I actually learned to drive stick in my friends old Bronco. It was a horrible car to learn in as it was so old and worn you could pretty much put it into gear without having to even use the clutch. Shortly after I bought my first "real" car a 1.8T MKIV Jetta. Got stuck at the light next to the dealer for like 3 lights before I could get her into gear because it was on an incline.
But I agree the Z would be a harder car to learn in. Although now I'm use to the feel and love it. Every other stick shift I drive now feels sloppy. |

The z4m wouldn't be the easiest car to teach on due to the clutch pedal, but it's definitely doable. Plus once somebody can drive the z4m smoothly every car will be super easy to adapt to.
I've taught quite a few people how to drive stick shift and nobody has ever grinded a gear - just tell them to always (1) clutch in then (2) move the gear lever. In my experience most people stall a lot but grinding was never an issue for me. |
