Well had a chance to clean the area today. It's a real pain to get up into that area and scrub. Had the fan and the AC belt out to give some space. I just used some simple green and water. Didn't have a chance to test drive but I did run the engine for a few minutes and had the wife rev it to 3k-4K to see if I can hear any VANOS rattle. No noise out of the ordinary so nothing catastrophic going on inside the VANOS at the moment.
I than checked for any apparent new oil leaking focusing on the chain Tensioner and the area behind the VANOS but couldn't see any new oil. I plan on taking it for a longer drive tomorrow and inspect again. Not sure if that will make a difference. Pictures are from after I ran the engine. Will post back tomorrow |

It won't leak until the engine gets up to temperature, the oil gets thinner and the metal expand. The cam chain tensioner has a copper washer that's easy to replace, I only had to tighten mine a bit but bought a spare washer just in case.

Milamookie, it's 50 Nm or 37 FT LBS on the chain tensioner. Hope that helps.

Well after the clean up I took her for a proper test drive. Did about 20 miles of varying driving and car was up to temp for a good amount of time. Got her home, jacked her up and inspected. Couldn't find a drop of new oil anywhere. What gives? Could it be a leak from the PO that was sorted out at some point. No new oil from the chain tensioner or even from behind the VANOS. At this point I'm going to put her away for the winter and drive and inspect more in the spring. Still making plans for a VANOS overhaul though.

when you get it hot enough it will return....... But you've done a great cleanup, and i agree with your next steps, deal with it in spring.
