After searching around, I bought my '07 Z4MC about 3 mo. ago for $27K...
- 35K miles, NAV, clean CarFax, and 6 months of left on maintenance and factory warranty.

The savings helped, but I just used it for new tires and the extended 7yr/70K warranty...

In three years, my guess is that unmolested examples will be in low to mid twenties. Moderately used ones will be in the very high teens.

I'd like to see the z4mc sell at more of a premium than a comparable E46 m3 in the future, but so far, a 2006 e46 m3 costs more than a comparable z4mc.

yes but you have to remember with the $7500 cash back + slow sales these cars were offered to many customers brand new for ~$40k. The e46 m3 in 06 was $55-60k.

So the e46 m3 has depreciated 60% in 4 years while the z4MC has depreciated only ~30% of it's original for sale price. Trust me depreciation wise the mz4 is a much better buy than an e46 m3 which won't be worth anything close to a similar condition, similar year mz4 in 3-4 years.

I care even though I plan to keep and drive mine indefinitely; if something happens to it, the market value determines how much money I will get to replace it, and how much I'll spend to find another good Z4M. For those still paying them off, it determines if they're upside down financially if it's totaled.

It's those of us that drive them that have something to worry about - the one's gathering dust aren't at risk to Mindy Motormouth and her Cellphone of Doom or her boyfriend Ted the Texting Terror or a host of other risks.

I bought my car used and didn't know about the 7500 rebate, but was that cash back instituted because the car wasn't selling well / unpopular? If so, wouldn't it still be unpopular /not sell well in the future? I just wonder how much demand there will be for our cars in the future when it took a $7500 rebate to move these in the past.

Originally, BMW hoped to sell a thousand or so Z4Ms a year, split between roadsters and coupes. After the debut in May 2006, the car seemed hot and BMW ramped up production fo 2007. Their original projections turned out to be on target, and so they were swamped with excess cars. They heavily discounted the 2007s to clear the lots and reduced production of 2008s, pretty much only building cars to order. This is why there are more 2007s than 2006 and 2008 cars combined - it was the only full year of production at near capacity.

As for demand - the largest market for Z4Ms has always been non-M Z4 owners (I was one myself). As prices depreciate and the original cars age, more Z4 owners will want to move up (though more will likely move on).

Yes the car didn't sell well when it was new. Neither did the MZ3 coupe and look at the current prices for those cars.

How a sports car sells when it was new and it's used value years later really has no real correlation; there are tons of sports car from the NSX, mkIV Supra etc. that weren't very popular sellers when they were new due mainly to competition with porsche and corvette, and now a 1992 NSX is the same price as a 2004 911 or 2006 corvette.

Also people who purchase new BMW's are different from those who buy used BMW's. The younger enthusiast crowd tends to buy 2 and 3 year old cars, and demand for the Mz4 just keep rising as the bangle styling has come into it's own and begun to be accepted by the majority of enthusiasts, and also because of the bloat the new generation of BMW's has gained, in all likelihood this will be the last true BMW sportscar for a while.

Going back to how these cars sold when new most of these cars were sold as 3 year leases and vast majority sold were 07 models, so the supply of lease return cars is going to dry up in the next year. The availability of the 1800 US cars isn't going to be nearly what it currently is. The market for anyone looking to buy the "right" Mz4 is going to dwindle and enthusiasts looking for that certain car are going to have to start paying a premium.

Very informative thread!

I wasn't aware about the mass production in 2007. So it seems like will be easiest to find decent 2007 MY on the market in the 2010-2011 timeframe.

I did a quick search on autotrader to provide some stats on US based 2006-2007 Z4MC under $30k.
23 were found: 6 were 2006 MY, 16 were 2007 MY, 1 was 2008 MY. This is in line with the production patterns stated in previous post. I read on one of the ads that only 248 M coupes were brought to the US in 2008.

Aren't the 1815 cars for North America (U.S. & Canada) combined?

Yep. And to answer the above question, the breakout is 380 2006 M coupes, 1187 in 2007, 248 in 2008. Not a lot of reasons to favor one year over the other, making it more desirable. In 2007 we got in-tire TPMS sensors and satellite radio as an option, in 2008 we got HD radios fitted. I will road-trip to the home of the first Z4MC owner that posts an ad saying "ultra-rare 2006!" and slap him upside the head, assault charges be damned.

In three years you won't be able to use the 1815 production number as a reference. A lot of these cars have already been wrecked or turned into track cars. Plus there won't be any sitting on BMW dealer lots in 3 years. It'll be private parties or independent used car dealers selling them. It wil probably be fairly easy to find a high mileage heavily used car, and they won't be worth much, and it will probably be quite difficult to find a low mileage excellent car, and they will be worth a lot more.

I don't think most Z4Ms are racking up daily-driver miles. The typical sports car is a 2nd or 3rd car, and logs 5k-7.5k miles/year (half that if you've got 2), and most here seem to fit that model. I'm averaging ~6k miles a year myself.

I think there have been several other threads that discussed how many miles owners driver per year and whether they consider their car a "daily driver" or a weekend toy. It seemed like there was a fairly even split between the two attitudes. So based on that I think the number of low mileage excellent unmolested cars in a few years will number in the hundreds.

There is also more of a market for the M3 due to having 4 seats and a real trunk.
