Torque question
Just completed my Inspection II at 60k miles. Only two valves outside specification. Changed a total of seven shims to bring all of them to my target value of .20mm for the intakes and .30mm for the exhaust.
Prior to firing it up, my question deals with the torque value for the spark plugs. In the past, I've simply hand-tightened and then snugged up the plugs. This time, I elected to follow the specified torque value of 20 foot pounds. Geez, it seems to be a lot for a spark plug. Am I going to be able to get these things out in 30-40k miles. Also, contrary to BMW recomendations, I did use a modest amount of anti-cease on the plugs; NGK's. Look forward to the collective thought of the group. |

There's a whole go-around on that here.
Personally, I use anti-seize to prevent galling upon removal and reduce torque to 17 ft*lbs. You need to be a little more than snug on these plugs. They have crush washers. If you're paying close attention, you can feel new ones squish. |

Yes, thanks - that's what I elected to do. After fretting a bit, I removed the plastic cover and found that they hadn't bottomed out at 20'lbf.
Along with piece of mind in adjusting the valves, engine seems to be much smoother - should be after: Oil change and filter Intake, cabin and vanos filter Valve adjustment New plugs and ignition coils New belts, idlers and tension pulleys Along with brakes, diff trans and brake fluid change next weekend. |
