"hissing" rear shocks

My roadster's rear shocks "hiss" while unloading on bumpy roads. The noise seems to be coming from both sides equally and the car seems to be riding normally. UNUSUAL?

How rough a road are you talking? compression noises of shocks are normal if they're being run hard on bumpy roads.

Look at the shock bodies, as long as they're not coated in oil you should be ok.

The roads I travel are fairly normal....nothing too bumpy. The car does this on even the most minor of road imperfections, truth be told. I took a look at the shock bodies....no abnormal oil. I guess I'll chalk it up to the fact that the shocks are inches from my head with virtually no isolation from the cabin!

I've noticed that same sound... years ago with my Z3 and now with my Z4 coupe (only 5,500 mi.). I drive on some pretty rough roads, though, including poorly patched and worn cobblestone.

My shocks always look good, too, and I'm tempted to agree with your take of sitting close to the car's rear shocks with relatively little noise insulation.

Thanks...at least I now know I'm not hearing things.

It's completely normal. There's a speed bump at a crossing I walk by 30 times a day and every car hisses as it goes over it. Never noticed the sound of shocks until I started working here.
