Almost ready for Inspection 2
The odo just rolled over the 43k mark a few days ago. Inspection 2 counter says 1,125 miles to go before Inspection 2 is due as of this morning. I've ordered the spark plugs, valve cover gasket kit, and vanos filter. The shop who will be helping me check the valves is supplying the shims. I have changed the transmission and differential oils. I will be changing the engine oil this weekend. Wondering if there is anything else I might be forgetting?

If the shop has the shim tool and a good micrometer, I would suggest asking them about their feeler gauges. If they are using the BMW specified, then I would pick up a set of the Craftsman in smaller increments as it is easy to still have valves outside the spec. like .24mm *intake or .34 *exhaust as well as too tight at .17 and .27. Also you or they will need the high temp silicone gasket seal for the half moon areas on the head. TIS shows the areas. Good lighting helps, mini mirror for the rear seal visual, label the O2 sensors as they are easy to mix up. I just used a piece of painter's tape on one of them to distinguish. Clean the spark plug wells and I pre-cleaned the gasket to strip it of any oil residue before I placed it on the head. Take pics

Would recommend checking power steering lines. Just had one go out on me this past weekend, cost me have a day on track.

Dropped my car off at the shop Sunday night and they completed the work by Monday afternoon. I forgot to give them the valve clearance spec sheet but they did tell me only 6 shims were needed, the rest of the valves were all within spec. My car has 44k miles FWIW. They also put in the new spark plugs I provided. They said everything else looks great and to keep doing whatever it is I am doing. Drove it around today but can't really tell much difference. Maybe a tad bit smoother? Other than that, runs just as good as it always has. Love it.

Having the engine run the same (good) after a valve adjustment is a GOOD thing IMO.
