M54 tunes ESS vs Dinan vs Shark
Not really a question in here, just rambling thoughts.
I didn't realize that ESS had a tune option and that they say 10 wheel horsepower vs the others quoting half this and I'll be generous and assume WHP as well. Software is a lot easier than the diff swap and it will also compensate for the lack of sport but not make it too noticably faster, I get that part. has anyone done the ESS option for the m54 2.5 or 3.0? Dinan says 4hp and 5lbft for $300 Shark says 5hp and 7lbft for $350 ESS says 10whp and 10lbft for $700

I would discourage you from spending money on a tune, it's just not worth it IMO.

If you want to do anything I say get the AFE intake or something and pull the foam out of the sound generator. It roars when you put your foot down, but it's quiet otherwise.
And if you want to make up for the lack of the sport package, replace your suspension. All the sport button does in relation to power is change the throttle response, I keep it off most of the time. Also check your VANOS and DISA valve. And maybe get lighter wheels.

I had the Shark Injector. I was very happy with it because it improved throttle response and raised the redline. You don't have to worry about shipping your ECU off because it utilizes an all-inclusive unit that saves your old tune and flashes the new one. This was really helpful when it came time to remove the Shark tune and load my supercharger tune. Check out my build thread for more info.

I know about the shark dongle, I had hoped for a local shop to do a proper tune, but to no avail. I am close to a Dinan shop and a shop for the ESS tune as well. I do have lighter wheels, they are a bit wider, so I am trying to deal with greater rolling resistance by adding a little power. CAI I keep seeing people say they are worthless or lose power, and I have done the sound gen mod along with Remus exhaust. Louder is not my goal, just to keep up with the stock boys and maybe get a better throttle response. I don't for a second believe the tunes are going to make me feel anything when you are talking a less than 5% gain in most cases.
Suspension time is near already, clicking balljoints, torn shock mounts. We'll see about other issues.
