Installing scoops
Anyone in the mid-atlantic installed an RPI scoop? For the life of me, I can't figure out how. The directions are complete garbage. No matter how I maneuver it around, I cannot get the holes to line up with anything solid to screw into.
I'm generally good at this sort of thing to. |

They are a bit of a pain.
IIRC there were some install pics on here somewhere.

Mine doesnt line up like that. To get bottom of the RPI piece to line up with the intake tube, the screw holes are INSIDE the tube, with nothing to screw into

Loooong phillips screwdriver helps. After the first one the second was much easier. Not that this helps....

I had to screw the scoops into the rubber/plastic. I could only get 2/3 screws in because I lost the top one; word of advice, put the screw into the guide holes on the scoops first. Don't put the scoop in and then try to put the screw into the guide holes---that's how I lost a screw.

This is a freaking disaster. As I said, if I line up the intake tube with the scoop, none of the screw holes line up with anything at all. Frustrating. I need help.
another issue...the AFE pro dry panel filter I bought doesn't fit right either. I can't get the inside, closest to the engine, side of the housing to sit back down flush. This whole project is a disaster. Last edited by vicj; 04-15-2011 at 04:25 PM.. |

Hey Vic. That's my pic above. Link here --> http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=503948
Yeah, it's a nutty install for sure. The best advice I got is: position the unit where you want it, then FORCE each self-tapping screw in one at a time. I started with the one on the bottom tang, and then did the one on the bottom left (pictured). That last empty hold you see there? Yeah, there's a large hole behind it, left from the previous stock scoop. So NO WAY a screw will go there. However, there's enough BEEF that it's not necessary. I would do as the link Dubbedown provided said --> drill new holes. A VERY long phillips screwdriver is a must as Moustich said. And it doesn't hurt to be a contortionist either. Oh yeah, and whatever you do, make sure to place a rag or something below you to catch any errant screws. If you lose a screw there and it drops down... you'll have to take the entire under-pan off to get it (or let it rust and rattle down there). Hope that helps. I have a long screwdriver. The problem is there is nothing to screw to, if I get the intake tube to line up properly with RPI piece. I suspect now RPI sent the wrong piece.

I'm out having dinner now. I'll snap one in a few minutes. One question for those who had no trouble, is the bottom of the scoop supposed to sit flush with the intake tube on the car? That's the problem i'm having...if the scoop and tube are flush, the screw holes on the RPI piece are actually INSIDE the tube, and there's nothing behind the screw holes to screw unto.

I left a gap at the bottom between the scoop and the duct. Plus I got some bigger screws, not longer, and used three of them to hold it securely. Was a bit of a pain but finally got it all working fine. Sent a pic to RPI and they said the gap at the bottom was not an issue. I've had it on for about a month and no problems.

So, there IS a gap at the bottom. I would think that kind of defeats the purpose. This site wont allow me to attach a pic from my cell phone. So I still dont even know if I have the right piece.
anyone using the AFE Pro Dry S panel filter? |

Looks like it's a bit of a pain to install.
What I don't understand is why the design doesn't simply accomodate the stock screw location to affix the scoop. One could re-use those press fasteners or large rivets maybe? I'd be much more inclined to buy a scoop if the installation was smoother (and 100% reversible). |

Well, I finally got it all installed. It bothered me immensely that the original design of the product is so flawed, that HUGE gaps remain once installed between the RPI piece, and the stock intake tube. This would negate any "Ram-Air" effect at best, and create a lot of air turbulence at worst.
So, Once I installed it (by drilling new holes like in a previous post, thank you for the suggestion), I used an epoxy resin to fabricate an extended bottom to the RPI piece, so now there are no gaps between the scoop and the intake tube. Don't know if it means a thing, but I feel better about it. As I was doing that, I thought it might be REALLY cool to work on a REAL Ram-Air scoop, that would completely seal with the intake tube, then extend out to become part of the grill itself. I'm going to work on a prototype. I'm thinking it could simply take up the space between two of the grill slates, and be completely sealed behind. A real Ram-Air induction, instead of scoop and hope. I'll let you know.... The issues I had with the AFE Panel filter I figured out as well. While I was having the VANOS replaced, the dealership had removed the air box. When they re-installed it, they accidentally left the front part of the intake box slightly OUT of the rubber mantle that seals it to the intake tube. One corner was pinched up against the mantle instead of in the mantle. This pushed the whole bottom left corner of the airbox back about half an inch, making it nearly impossible to seal the top half properly with the bottom half. They probably never noticed, and with the factory filter, it ALMOST shut right. However, with the AFE filter, and it's much thicker, heavier duty surround, it simply wouldn't close properly. Easy fix, but time consuming to find. So, since my Vanos replacement about 7,000 miles ago, I've actually been driving around with a "Hot Air" intake! LOL. |

There was someone on BFc that made/sold homemade scoops and it looked pretty solid after a few iterations. I want to say his name was iranmeba.
