Oxygen Sensor issues

I think I have found the root of my issue.

My car finally threw an SES light and when scanned, read out two fault codes: P1633 and P2629. The P1633 is something to do with throttle (have tried replacing TPS under the intake manifold with a known working unit from my father's car, and felt zero difference). The P2629 is O2 sensor I believe, and from what others are saying on the forum here regarding the symptoms, I'm thinking that it's the problem.

IIRC, the code is for the primary O2 sensors in the USDM headers. Can anyone share info as to whether I should go ahead, bite the bullet, and replace *both* sensors to the tune of $400? Anything else I should check first? Is there ANY way to know which sensor it is without having to buy both??

Thanks in advance!

the O2 sensors do tend to fail after a while in some cars so it is not an rare occasion. If anything shop around and see if an indie can do it for less money. Would you know if the fault is in the primary or secondary sensors?

nekky,

I am sorry if this comes off a bit brusk, but if you would have performed a basic Google search on 'BMW P2629', you would have been rewarded with

P2629 O2 Sensor Pumping Current Trim Circuit/Open Bank 2 Sensor 1

This is the pre-cat sensor (B2S1) on cylinders 4-6.

Personally, I would only replaced the failed sensor.

No apology necessary! I had done the search, and that's what I found.

When looking at ECStuning's webpage http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-Z4-M_Ro...Oxygen_Sensor/ I am a bit confused. When you say "pre-cat", is that "pre-(secondary)cat"? They all say that they're located in the exhaust manifold, AFTER the cat (the primary). They say "rear position of manifold" for all four sensors they have available (two Bosch and two BMW).

I have extremely cheap access to the Bosch units, although I've heard they are lower quality. They are half to 25% of the price of BMW units, so that's what I'll be using.

Thanks again for the help, guys!

Pre-cat is before the main cat (header cats) but after the engine, ie in between the engine and cat. This is the sensor 1 (S1). Post cat is after the cat. This is sensor 2 (S2). Bank 1 (cylinders 1-3) precat sensor 1 would be B1S1. B1S2 would be bank 1, sensor two (after cat). B2 (cylinders 4-6) is bank 2.

I have never replaced my O2 sensors on the ///M, but I did have to on the Roadster. the pre-cat sensors were not the same part numbers so make sure you know which one's go where.....if applicable.

This is extremely helpful. Thanks man.

Just ordered the pre-cat sensor from Dilawri BMW in Regina, SK. Cost me $250 CAD, taxes in... And that was a dealer to dealer price... Wow. The part number I ended up needing (according to Shipkiller) is 11787540167. Pre-cat O2 sensor for Bank 2.

I just looked at RealOEM and on the S54 both the B1S1 and B2S1 sensors are the same part number. Like I said before, on the M54 they are different.

The part number is correct according to RealOEM.

Yep. Thanks again!

Nope, not yet Marc. I was thinking I should just go ahead and order the "Exhaust Manifold Install Kit" from ECStuning. Includes all the gaskets, studs, bolts, hardware, etc to bolt up a new set.

I may just hold off until the spring. We'll see.

The board wisdom says from below. That is what I'm planning to do. Would appreciate any opinions one way or another.

Just finished it. Was kind of a combination of both.

Worked from the top to get everything off, unclip the wire, etc.. Then got the O2 sensor socket (22mm) on and used a swivel adapter to finish it off.

Another question: Now that the car has the fresh O2 sensor, and I've cleared the codes from the DME, how long will it take for me to notice a difference in drivability? Should it be right away? It seems to idle better, but still died once driving around the lot.

Nekky-

Installed AA header over winter. Drove it for first time 2 days ago.. Took it out on the fwy and got a bunch of Cels when I hit the sport button.

P1633
P114B
P2198
P2270
P0174
P0430

Seems crazy to me that headers would do all this.

What did you find solved your issue _ I am close to pulling the trigger on ESS525.. If I need a tune I mine as well do it now.
