Exclamation z4 M owners: must read

>> for z4 M owners <<
my production date was 6-1-06.
with 735 miles on it, the passenger side motor mount bolts (per the service bulletin) were found to be loose, not broken thank goodness. All four bolts were replaced under warranty.
I have a Roadster... I would advise every z4M roadster or coupe owner to have the dealer check it out. you don't want to find out the hard way...
I am re-posting this throughout the various forums/ sorry if it seems redundant; it's too important not to broadcast...
(thanks to all the early contributors that have brought this to light!)

I'm only a couple hundred miles from my next service and have been meaning to have this checked. Thanks for the reminder. I'm sure having the service bulletin number will be helpful to convince the dealer of the necessity. Did you have this done at D&R North?

This is pretty common knowledge on all the forums, actually (there's a post in the FAQ here about it). Although it typically has only happened to 07-year coupes. The problem is that shops don't check even if you ask them to, whether there's a bulletin or not.

It's still worth mentioning even if you have an 07-08. I brought in the SIB and had them take a look, two of the four bolts were found to be loose.

Forgot which forum I was on. It's in the FAQ over on bimmerfest. The vast majority of affected vehicles on the forums have been 07 coupes.

I brought in the SIB and my dealership swapped the bolts out with the one in the bulletin. This was over a year ago.

There's no reason why it shouldn't be checked if you have the SIB in hand.

Took mine in for a tire vibration last Thursday. Asked the SA to check out the bolts since there was a SIB out on it. Went in to pickup Thursrday evening. He flat out told me there was no such service issue or SIB issued for that problem. Said not to worry about it. How about those beans. Joe Machens BMW, Columbia MO

I printed out the SIB and took it with me to have it checked check as part of scheduled service. They say they did and all is fine. Two months later after only weekend driving, mine give way. Pretty obvious they didn't take the time/energy to check since the bolts back themselves out over time and only after one or two are missing/loose do the others shear and leave the engine listing to the right-side.

I've been following this issue from when I had my M roady.
Now that I have the M Coupe on the way, I'm going to get this done whether they are loose now or not.

Just curious, has anyone heard of this issue with the S54 in the M3,
or is this just Z4 specific?

It was not a known issue with the E46 M3, or the last Z3Ms with the S54 engine either. Most people seem to agree that it was an assembly problem with the Z4Ms in Spartanburg. It is also a common story for owners to be told by dealerships that the bolts were "checked and fine" only to have them break later. As I have posted previously, to truly check all 8 bolts requires significant disassembly of the car. When I replaced my engine mount bolts, I found two were loose on the passenger side and two were loose on the driver side. The driver side isn't even mentioned in the SIB. My car only had 2000 miles on it at the time, so obviously it came that way from the factory.

BMWNA isn't going to do anything about a problem like this involving a few thousand cars made several years ago. If you want to make sure you will not have broken engine mount bolts, the only true fix is to replace all 8 bolts with grade 10.9 bolts, make sure they are properly torqued to spec, and use some kind of thread locker to prevent them from loosening.

Awesome BMW dealership service by certified technicians! Take your car in for an oil change, come back with a blown engine!

On the rare occasions that I do take my car to the dealer, I do several things to try to avoid problems:
I tell them to not wash or clean the car at all
I try not to leave the car overnight
I make the SA fill out a sheet showing that there are no nicks, dings, or scratches anywhere on the car
I have one tech who has been there for over 10 years who works on my car.
