I will preface this by saying that I love Boxsters and it seems you can get them for a great price.
Porsche products of that and other years can have total engine failure when the intermediate shaft flies apart. I'm lead to believe that the risk of such a failure is low on higher mileage cars, as it typically happens at lower mileages. But I'm certainly no expert. I've seen a site where you can order a retrofit kit to have installed to avoid the issue, but I think it costs $1,000 plus significant labour to install. There is some debate about just how often this failure occurs and whether its been exagerated on the Internet. Personally, if I wanted a Boxster, I would look into that retrofit kit idea. The cost of the kit and its installation, combined with the decent price for a Boxster may still be a good deal.

Vanne: Hey at least we have hair!!
Regardig the boxster vs z, I tried both. I'll admit the boxster may have a tiny bit more handling prowess but I didnt like the car as much as the Z (obviously!). Didn't really care for the interior quality (felt dated) and the IMS from that period obviously didn't help make a case for reliability. I've had my z for about a year and a half and I still absolutely love it. Try both; see which rocks you and then pick! -gc |

I own a 2000 Boxster S and a Z4MC. Both have their positives and negatives as you would imagine.
The MAIN issue with the Boxster is that it's a ticking time bomb with the IMSB issue as noted earlier. Total crap shoot, and it's a $2k replacement now, or maybe $20k later for a new engine if it lets go. That said, I have 115k miles on mine, check the oil with Blackstone regularly, and so far, so good. If it goes, i will junk the car as the engine cost 2x the car value. Now, that said, it is one of the most fun driving cars ever. I track and AX it regularly, and have a BLAST! Wish it had the extra 100hp that the Z has, but it's just a hoot for a DE car. I will drive it until it dies. And yes, you will take PLENTY of ribbing about it being a girl car. The Z, as many will attest, is also fantastic, but in very different ways. While it handles well, it is far less predictable (IMHO) than the Porsche. There is a really good TopGear episode where the two are compared, and it is spot on . That pretty well sums it up...

When the Boxster was introduced, it was well regarded and for that matter, it still is. In between, the E85 and E86 M's were produced. Have driven the same year Boxster S to mine, and there is no comparison. Have never regretted the decision made.

just noticed you have a pantera as well. NICE! Do you remember it being in any movies or something like that? I could of sworn I saw it on some show or movie and I can't remember where. It was a red or maroon one, and it was only like in 1 or 2 scenes with the actor.

So you are saying the M is better? In what way? Sure our M's will outrun the Boxster S in straight line, but the handling of my 2002 Boxster 2.7 was so much more precise. Boxster brakes are also phenomenal(better IMO than what the Z4 uses). I will say the M makes you work a lot harder to get the most out of it.

Not an exact comparison, but I test drove a buddy's Cayman and was not as impressed as I thought I'd be. It handled very nicely but it had a very sterile feel and was kind of uninteresting. The steering wheel felt like a coat hanger in my hands, the shifter was long and mushy, clutch had no feedback, etc. It can take a corner faster sure, but it is not very exciting or raw, which is what I was looking for.

just say NO to boxsters. period.
if you're gonna get a porsche, you get a 911. i'd vote for late 80s/early 90s air cooled, but anything other than the current boat-sized ones works. |

Haha, that reminds me of that Brave movie, lol spot on mate. ; D
And huz, come on mate, you know I love the roady. :P Back on topic though, the boxter is also nice, but no where near as fun to drive than the m coupe. Btw, if you can stretch it, I would look for either an M coupe/roady, the hydrolic steering along is worth it.
