How do you install Remus cans...can't get them to fit
Anyone know? Tried tonight to install new Remus cans but the rear bracket won't line up. I can't possibly compress the OEM rubber bracket enough to get the Remus rear brace to line up. There is a crazy cross brace on the cans that is in the way. Bizarre...
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and help. I finally did my own "shade tree mechanic" mods to these cans and installed them yesterday. I ended up cutting half way down on both sides of the cross bar (using a grinder) then bending the bar back so the hanger would slide down enough to line up the bolt holes. I decided to try this instead of cutting them completely and re-welding them lower as they are made of 304 stainless. I shot them with a quick dusting of VHT header paint to finish. Now if that toxic burning smell of new silencers would dissipate, I'd be happy. I just hope that smell is normal and I didn't screw something up. Pictures below:

Which hanger are you having trouble with? Location B or C of the attached picture that I stole from another thread? You can loosen the hanger nuts of both hangers to get some more wiggle room. After you threaded both bolts through the hanger, you can tighten up the hanger nuts. Even the OE cans, I had trouble at location "C". But after loosening the nuts on the hangers gave enough play to allow to start both bolts.

Since my aren't new, I might just cut the cross-brace and have another piece welded on a little bit further down. |

Okay. Guy I bought them from says it took him + friend and a lot of swearing to get these on. It's possible but a huge PITA.
I'm going to hack the cross brace off and get a new piece welded in. But mine are used so it's not a big deal. New? Wouldn't be happy. Pretty simple thing to have done this right to during design and testing. Last edited by Finnegan; 06-24-2012 at 06:50 PM.. |

Is the cross brace really necessary? It appears that only Remus have the cross brace. You can probably just dremel/hacksaw it off and not bother with the re-weld
I'm surprised that no one had brought this up since there are quite a few members have this setup. |

Good point, thanks, probably can just remove the brace. The hanger itself acts to reinforce the open (threaded) end anyway. (Solid metal bushings in the rubber mount.)

I emailed these same pics to Remus USA today. We'll see how they respond. Doesn't make since to dremel out this brace on a new set...crazy design.

I wouldn't be happy about it either if I bought it new and had fitment issues. It would be interesting to hear what Remus have to say about it.

He said that I may want to try cutting the cross brace off and re-welding it on at a lower position. Full Disclosure: This is a brand new (never installed) set of Remus Silencers that were originally purchased from Remus USA last year. I purchased them from the original owner (a forum member) a couple of months ago. The original owner "forum member" bought these and then decided to go with Eisenmann instead. He waited to long to take advantage of the return policy at Remus. At any rate, I am a little uncomfortable try to mangle these new cans. I may put them up for sale. But then again, who would buy them knowing they would have to modify them.

just take them to an exhaust or machine shop, thats something that wouldnt take long to fix and has nothing to do with the actual muffler itself. I would repair and call it a day. Unless your wishing you had gone with a different muffler, i see no reason to get rid of them.

Mine are the same flawed design...they have been on the car for a year with no modifications and are fine

Glad to see that you'd found an alternate solution. Still a PITA for what supposedly a "bolt-on" mod.
