Front and rear view camera

I've never showcased my video module so I wanted to share my front and rear cameras on video. The rear camera is nice but the front is probably the most useful camera since the nose is so low!

I'm glad you posted this. I never really got to check it out in person but I've always been jealous! Do you have pictures of how he two cameras are mounted?

The front camera is brilliant! Look forward to seeing how you did this, though sadly I have no nav, so this will never be an option for me.

Something like this will work:
http://www.navtool.com/bmw_Z4_2003-2008.aspx

Then you have to wire up a camera (can be purchased on ebay for about $15-20) or buy a wireless adapter to make installation easier (around $10-20). I bought something like this for my truck 3 years ago due to limited visibility behind my tailgate, but I still haven't gotten around to installing it.

Jumbosock: It looks like your screen view turns on automatically when you put the car in reverse, but if you want the front camera view you need to hit the manual button. Are there any changes to your system menu? Also hard to see, but how is the quality of the camera on the OEM nav screen? It seems to be pretty low resolution, with maybe 16 colors between the system menus and navigation map. Does the video module bring out the full-color potential of the OEM screen?

I got my video module from navtool as Twixboy posted. There are no menu changes. I'm pretty sure the module brings out the full potential of the screen. I routed the front camera behind the side skirt and up through some grommet in the trunk. The rear camera just comes up through another rubber grommet in the trunk. I have the power of the rear camera spliced into the reverse lights. The power to the front camera goes to the module and the switch controls it. Incidentally, I did not remove the DVD player for install. I accessed the rear of the DVD from the trunk. It took a while (much patience and a mirror) to make the connection but it was nice not having to remove the DVD player.

Front camera would be easy to install. Rear is trickier especially if you don't have the M bumper with the mesh. I'm not sure I'd want to drill into my rear bumper.

I don't like drilling either. I always use the 3M double sided tape that is typically used for emblems. It works super well and lasts pretty much forever.

Nice job. I have the navtool unit, but haven't installed it yet. I think you have inspired me to add the front camera now too. How did you choose to power the navtool unit? Did you tap a fuse in the fuse box?

It's been MANY years so I don't remember how I tapped into the power. I'll update this thread if I come across how I did it.

Incidentally, I checked out the navtool website and they are now on version 3 of their video module which includes HDMI smartphone mirroring. I'm going to highly consider this upgrade but I'll make sure the harnesses are as plug and play as possible before I order.

It's been 50% off on that website for at least the past 6 months.

I think its half off because they are getting rid of inventory to start selling their version 3.0 with HDMI smart phone mirroring.
