Headroom: coupe vs convertible

Hi all,

First post here although used to spend a little time on 1addicts.

I’m considering buying a Z4M coupe but finding one to test drive without getting on a four hour flight has proved difficult. In fact, finding any coupe to test drive in my state has not been possible. However, there convertibles, including Ms.

My question is: is headroom the same between coupe and ‘vert (roof up, obviously)?

I’m about 188cm and headroom can occasionally be an issue with smaller cars.

Thanks in advance
Michael

From the wiki:

The Coupe's fixed roof increases torsional rigidity, resulting in a stiffness of 32,000 N⋅m (24,000 lb⋅ft) per degree of body twist on the coupe (compared to 14,500 N⋅m (10,700 lb⋅ft) per degree on the roadster), which improves turn-in and overall handling response.[13] The roof has a 'double bubble' contour which serves as an aerodynamic aid and offers more headroom than the roadster with top closed, the Coupé has a sleek fastback rear window that slopes down to an integrated spoiler shaped to deliver downforce to the rear axle at speed.

Does the coupe have significantly more headroom than the roadster? I'm on the shorter side and while headroom isn't a problem per say it definitely feels cramped and tight with the top up. Top down I have all the space in the world

Getting into a 128i vert was a whole different ball game. Had tons of headroom and glass around me and never once felt claustrophobic. Don't like driving the roadie with the top up; can't imagine having a coupe as a DD if it were similar.

You will be cramped at 6'2. No doubt about it. I'm around that height and I tend to tilt to the side to clear my head

Thanks all for the speedy replies.

So, it seems the coupe does have more headroom (thanks, Pungo), and people around 6 foot are okay in either coupe or convertible.

Punisher - do you have a coupe or convertible?

Does anyone know how much extra headroom the coupe has?

My thinking is that if I am comfortable with the headroom in a convertible - which I can test drive- the coupe will be fine. The situation becomes less clear if I find the convertible doesn’t have enough headroom.

Thanks, Punisher.

Time to try folding myself into a convertible, I suppose.

I hope I fit. After researching a bunch of different cars, I really think the Z4 MC is the car for me

Big thanks to Digby!

Who would have thought a little question to gather indirect evidence from an international forum would result in a real example just down the road (relatively speaking).

I'm 6'3" and haven't had an issue with headroom in either coupe or vert. I have long legs though, so a shorter sitting height.

I'm 6 feet tall and no issues in my Z4M coupe.
Even with helmet and seat back pulled forward on track, I dont touch roof.

I had a 3.0i before my MZ4 Coupe, and I can tell you that with the top up, the coupe definitely has a lot more head room.

I'm 6'0" and when I tracked the 3.0i I would have to put the top down, otherwise it won't accommodate my big noggin with a helmet. Definitely not an ideal situation.

In the MZ4 Coupe, no problem with a helmet. Although it's the roof that I always bump into getting in and out with a helmet on. I've gotten into a habit of putting on my helmet after I get in the car.

Thanks everyone.

Digby showed me his car on the weekend, which is stunning, and I can confirm that I didn’t have any trouble with headroom.

At a guess, I had 5 to 10cm to spare above my hair height (an extra few cm above my head), so more than enough to feel comfortable.

With that item sorted out, I now need to find a good car!

Thanks again to everyone for the great responses.

Cheers
Michael

A few years ago, I enquired as to the number of E86 Z4 coupes in Australia from BMW Australia. I was told there were 103 Z4 M cars in the country ... say 90 now, allowing for accidents and write-offs. [ By comparison, there were 157 Z4 3.0 litre coupes (Auto and Manual) sold in Australia. Pretty rare either way.

As a side note, from time to time, I check sale prices on Carsales.com.au, and this is the first year that prices seem to have stopped dropping, and appear to have started increasing.
